Postdoctoral fellowship, University of Cape Town

The Policy Research in International Services and Manufacturing (PRISM), a research and policy unit located within the School of Economics in the Faculty of Commerce, is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PDF). Funding for this position is provided by a project investigated by Djiby Thiam.

The incumbent’s main responsibility is to conduct publishable research in the fields of environmental and resources economics. Secondary functions include grant writing for future projects related to the project. The PDF will work closely with A/Prof. Djiby Thiam. The PDF will be mentored to prepare them for an academic position. Period: The PDRF is expected to take up the fellowship in December 2021 or January 2022. Motivations for a delayed starting date of no later than February 2022  will be considered.

Fellowship value: R230 000 per year. The fellowship is compliant with the SARS policies/rules and is therefore exempt from taxation. No benefits or allowances are included in the value of the fellowship. Minimum requirements: 

•    The candidate must have achieved a Ph.D. in Economics in the field of Economics

•    Applicant must have qualified for their Ph.D. in the last 5 years.

•    The applicant may not previously have held full-time permanent professional or academic posts

•    Ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment

•    Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication and present research output

•    A track record of publications and/or conference contributions related to the research areas outlined above

Responsibilities: 

•    Interdisciplinary research in one or more of the areas outlined above

•    Publication of at least one journal article per year and delivering seminar and conference presentations.

•    Mentorship or co-supervision of postgraduate students.

•    Provision of research support in areas of expertise.

•    Contributions to the research activities of PRISM.
