Post-Doctoral Fellowship

SARChI Chair in governance and economics of water and sanitation sector institutions 
Centre for Water and Sanitation Research, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Bellville 

The Centre for Water and Sanitation Research (CWSR), Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is seeking a self-motivated, organised, and dynamic postdoctoral fellow to join the SARChI Chair in governance and economics of water and sanitation sector institutions, starting in January 2023. The candidate will be working with Prof Bongani Ncube. This position will be based at CPUT, Bellville Campus with expectations to travel to the field sites. 

In line with this, we are seeking candidates that can demonstrate evidence of: 

  • • A PhD degree in a subject relevant to water governance and economics obtained within the last 5 years 
  • • A good understanding of the South African Water sector is essential, relating to governance processes for water institutions, economics of the water and sanitation sector, financing models for water service delivery, economic regulation of the water and sanitation sector 
  • • Experience with qualitative data collection from a variety of stakeholders including focus group discussions, in-depth interviews and other participatory processes and tools (e.g. participatory mapping or diagramming workshops, dialogues, etc.) 
  • • Experience with processing and presenting quantitative and qualitative data 
  • • Experience with analysing qualitative data e.g. thematic/content analysis, inductive and deductive coding techniques, and knowledge of software packages e.g. Atlas.ti or Nvivo 
  • • Familiarity with literature on water governance, water resource management, social-ecological systems, resilience, adaptation, and collaborative governance 
  • • Experience of working in inter and trans-disciplinary projects 
  • • The candidate will be expected to mentor and co-supervise postgraduate students 

 

Knowledge of Afrikaans and isiXhosa in addition to English would be advantageous, or candidates should have experience of working with a translator. A South African driving license is essential. 

The position is available for one year initially, with a possibility for extension based on applicant performance.
