Dear all
Almost half-way into the 2nd semester during the pandemic we can see that teaching is still performed in the distance to a large extent. Examination with physical presence is, however, now more common. Several research activities that were cancelled during the spring have now restarted following risk analyses and activity plans aiming at safe procedures. This is pivotal. Although KI have commendably attracted many grants, approx. 100 mkr from a number of donors and started more than 500 studies on Covid-19 since March (our Department alone almost 50) we now have a research debt to deal with.
At a societal level, quite worrying signals indicate that many individuals do not fare well during the pandemic from disease-preventing restrictions themselves. Both the psychosocial and physical work environment is quite different to say the least. The department will therefore soon send out a work environment survey to gauge the potential problem at our department and I urge you to fill this out so that we can act if necessary and to the extent possible!
Thanks again everybody for measuring up in difficult times!
Mats

Influence and participation through collaboration
In the beginning of 2019, KI concluded a local agreement for collaboration together with the trade unions. What is new is that this collaboration should mainly occur between managers and employees.
The idea behind the collaboration is to have an open and trusting dialogue about our operations in order to contribute to the influence and participation of the employees. Collaboration creates conditions for increased competence and a good working environment, which in turn contributes to Karolinska Institutet’s development.
As an employee at KI, you can find out more about how we are collaborating and how it affects you.

New clues about the link between stress and depression
Researchers at CNS have identified a protein in the brain that is important both for the function of the mood-regulating substance serotonin and for the release of stress hormones, at least in mice. The findings, which are published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, may have implications for the development of new drugs for depression and anxiety.

Imagery reveals autism-related brain differences
People with autism spectrum disorder have lower levels of a protein that regulates the amount of serotonin in the brain, a paper from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry reports. For their study, the researchers used a molecular brain imaging technique to compare people with and without autism; their results offer hope of finding a drug that can alleviate the symptoms.

Sleepiness can have a negative impact on your social life
Being socially active generally increases your chances of getting a good night’s sleep. But if you are active late into the evening, it reduces the number of hours you sleep – and can also affect your social life. This is according to a new study from Stockholm University and Karolinska Institutet published in the scientific journal PNAS.
