Dear colleagues,
As we approach the end of 2022 and the holiday season, we may celebrate having finally turned the corner on the pandemic – due in no small measure to the amazing scientific advances that made vaccines possible. Major global health challenges remain, to be sure, but the progress of science and prosperity promises to eventually overcome them all. At the same time, humankind shows endless desire for self-destruction; Europe is at war again, and the planet keeps heating up.
But as we begin 2023, let’s recall that science may not only adress major human health and technological challenges, but that science as a social construct can serve as a model for a truly global society based on respect, trust and civil discourse. For me, what I love most about being a scientist is getting to work everyday with so many interesting colleagues of all ages, nationalities and personal histories. For that, I am grateful.
Wishing you a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Sincerely,
Sten

News from undergraduate teaching
|
The main part of the biochemistry implementation of biochemistry in the new medical programme has now been successfully completed, as well as the work associated with the revision of the MSc programme in biomedicine. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who have been involved in this work. It is now time to define new goals for MBB teaching, so please take a minute to share your most uninhibited ideas in this context. What can we do at MBB, that can’t be done anywhere else? Where shall we aim?

As a step to strengthen the teacher pool, we are introducing 2 to 3 MBB Frontier Teaching Awards, which includes SEK 400 000 for salary, open for anyone with a contract with MBB. If you are interested to become more involved in teaching, and wish to take on more strategic roles, submit your application no later than December 15 to Håkan Andersson. Full information about the MBB Frontier Teaching Awards.
Best regards,
Håkan Andersson
Director of undergraduate education (GUA) at MBB

Krishnanand Padmanabhan has joined Ulrika Marklund's group as a postdoctoral researcher. He obtained a PhD in Cell and Developmental biology from Tel Aviv University (Israel), where he explored the role of the actin cytoskeleton in the morphogenesis and physiology of mouse epidermis. In Marklund's group, he will study the mechanisms that diversify the cell fate identities of neurons in the Enteric nervous system. Outside the lab, he is interested in hiking and wildlife photography.

Shubham Singh has joined the research group of Prof. Jesper Haeggström as a postdoctoral researcher. He obtained his Ph.D. in Biophysics at Biozentrum in the University of Basel (Switzerland). During his Ph.D., he worked on eukaryotic protein expression, particularly for biosynthetic incorporation of unnatural amino-acids into proteins. He is also experienced with high-throughput screening and workflow automation. Currently he is trying to understand the structural and biophysical basis of the working mechanisms of proteins involved in the leukotriene pathway. Outside of the lab, he enjoys reading, travelling and cooking.
