To all KI doctoral students and supervisors,
We are writing to you in view of the continued Covid-19 pandemic. The KI recommendations follow the national and regional recommendations, and these will continue until further notice. Please make sure that you follow these explicitly and keep yourself updated!
The recommendations for activities within doctoral education are also updated as required and continue until further notice, as described at the webpage Consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on KI’s doctoral education. Basically, halftime reviews, attendance at thesis defences, theoretical courses and educational activities should primarily be conducted digitally, and work within KI premises should be conducted in accordance with physical distance recommendations. If you can work effectively at home, please do that, but make sure that effective supervisor-doctoral student dialogue continues.
This information is nothing new, but the real reason for writing is the following. We urge you to take an interest in each-other, not only at the workplace, but also digitally. It is stressful for us all to adapt to self-imposed isolation, and many of us miss the daily contact with colleagues that we are used to. It is important that everyone takes an interest in their nearest colleagues at all times, as we know that the nature of our chosen profession is challenging and stressful at the best of times, but even more so now. Make sure that no one is left without some form of regular contact. Most importantly, we are soon approaching the Christmas holiday season, a time when social isolation can be hardest to cope with. Please be aware that some of your colleagues, especially international masters, doctoral students and postdocs, might find themselves ‘stranded’ in Sweden and unable to join their families in their home countries. Even within Sweden, meeting friends and family might also be limited. If you have the possibility to include your colleagues at any time in activities (especially outdoors or digitally) during the festive season, please consider doing that.
So we urge you to show an interest – dare to ask instead of not daring to. While the KI leadership naturally cares about the well-being of its staff and students, can’t we use the ‘season of good will’ to show that we ALL care?
Kind regards,
Robert Harris, Academic vice president for doctoral education
Erika Franzén, Deputy-chairperson in the Committee for doctoral education

Mindworkout for doctoral students
Many doctoral students won’t realize their mental health is at risk until reaching a crisis. How we react to adversity and stress strongly affects how we succeed – having a resilient mindset is more so important. The DSA has partnered with the company Mindworkout to provide mental health training to doctoral students at KI. The DSA is initially trialling 100 spots and the program started with a Kick Off webinar on 11 November, 2020. The success of this partnership will help the DSA in considering its future utility.
