To all KI doctoral students and supervisors,
Not only are there new people taking up 7 new leadership positions centrally at KI, but we also have a new Committee for Doctoral Education. My vice chairperson Erika Franzén and I are very happy to have been re-elected to run the show. A vital part of the committee's work is the receiving and giving of feedback from/to our university. During January we visited all 22 departments and discussed doctoral education with them. It was fascinating to hear all the good practices being used.

We recently analysed the result from the Exit Poll for graduated PhD students, and that gives us an important picture of how doctoral education is experienced at KI. While the majority of indicators are steadily becoming even more positive, the written statements provided by some students indicate we still have room for improvement. It is vital for us to receive these different types of honest feedback, so I encourage you all to participate in surveys as often as you can. Together we shape and maintain our working environments so take your professional responsibility today and give a colleague some feedback.

Förtydligande av kravet att delta i internationell konferens
|

Kravet för doktorander att delta med egen presentation vid minst en internationell konferens avser deltagande på plats, inte digitalt deltagande.
För de som har ett digitalt deltagande i internationell konferens med egen presentation registrerat i Ladok före 2023-07-01 anses kravet vara uppfyllt även om de inte har deltagit på plats.
Möjligheten att få poäng registrerat för ytterligare konferenser (max-gränsen beror på när doktoranden antogs, se aktuell allmän studieplan) gäller både fysiskt och digitalt deltagande.

Ansök till den nationella interdisciplinära forskarskolan i register-baserad forskning (SINGS)
|
|
Forskarskolan som startar i november 2023 omfattar ett minimum av 8 veckors heltidsstudier (12 hp) som komplement till obligatoriska kurser vid doktorandernas hemuniversitet och pågår under två år.
Syftet är att stimulera interdisciplinär forskning och ge en fördjupad kunskap om och förståelse för hur registerdata kan och bör användas i forskning.

Ansök till den nationella forskarskolan i klinisk och translationell cancerforskning (NatiOn)
|

Forskarskolan som startar i april 2024 omfattar sammanlagt 17 veckors heltidsstudier (25,5 hp) och pågår under två och ett halvt år.
Utbildningen vänder sig till kliniskt verksamma doktorander, och programmet täcker framförallt molekylär onkologi och forskningsmetodik inom området cancer. Sökande bör ha ett kliniskt eller translationellt projekt inom cancerforskning.

Vill du tävla i Forskar Grand Prix under ForskarFredag den 29 september? Forskar Grand Prix är en tävling där forskare håller en presentation på 4 minuter på en scen inför publik och en jury. Den som håller den mest begripliga, fängslande och inspirerande presentationen av sin forskning går vidare till den nationella finalen i november. Handledare till gymnasieelever sökes!

Välkommen att anmäla ditt intresse för att vara handledare till en forskningsintresserad gymnasieelev sommaren 2023 (26 juni – 28 juli). Doktorander som anmäler sitt intresse förutsätts ha förankrat detta med handledare och forskargruppsledare. Viss ersättning utgår.
Tips: Att handleda en gymnasieelev kan vara ett utmärkt sätt att uppnå examensmålet avseende att bidra till samhällets utveckling och stödja andras lärande.

Textmatchning och plagiatgranskning
|
|
I samband med halvtidskontrollen ska KI:s doktorander köra sin litteraturöversikt i textmatchningsprogrammet iThenticate i syfte att skapa ett lärandemoment kring vetenskapligt skrivande. Det behövs förståelse för skillnaden mellan plagiat, självplagiat och mellan bristande kvalitet och god kvalitet samt ett gott omdöme när man tolkar en granskningsrapport. Det är viktigt att textmatchningsprogram inte ses som plagieringsdetektorer utan att resultatet sätts in i sitt sammanhang och att man förstår vad textöverlappen innebär. Därför ställer KI krav på att doktorand och handledare diskuterar dessa frågor.
Universitetsbiblioteket (KIB) anordnar workshops i ämnet, och nästa tillfälle är den 27 april kl. 13.00 – 14.00.

Migrationsverket ändrar sin praxis gällande utlandsvistelse
|
|
Förändringen innebär att det nu blir enklare för doktorander att bedriva delar av sin forskarutbildning utomlands utan att det påverkar deras möjlighet att få eller behålla sitt uppehållstillstånd i Sverige.

Från höstterminen 2023 höjs arvodet för opponenter vid disputation till 15 000 kr
|
|
Det är viktigt för kvaliteten på KI:s disputationer att universitetet kan attrahera de bäst lämpade opponenterna, och att dessa har tid att genomföra uppdraget med hög kvalitet. Ersättningsnivån har varit oförändrad sedan år 2011 och bakgrunden till beslutet att höja nivån från 10 000 kr till 15 000 kr från höstterminen 2023 är att nuvarande ersättningsnivå har bedömts vara låg i förhållande till uppdragets omfattning, vilket kan skicka felaktiga signaler.
För doktorander som disputerar under vårterminen 2023 är arvodet till opponent fortfarande 10 000 kr.

Forskarutbildningsstatistik från årsredovisningen 2022
|
|
Totala antalet aktiva doktorander under vårterminen 2022 var 2163 st. Det utfärdades 390 doktorsexamina och 2 licentiatexamina under året, och 399 nya doktorander, varav 63 % kvinnor, antogs.

Time to apply for doctoral courses

Clarification regarding participation in international conferences
|
|
The requirement to participate in at least one international conference with own presentation is met only when the doctoral student has participated on site, remote/digital participation is not enough.
Those who have a digital participation registered in Ladok per 2023-06-30 are regarded as having fulfilled that requirement even though they did not participate on site.
The possibility to have credits registered for more than one conference (the maximum number depends on the admission date, see the general syllabus) includes both physical and digital participation.

The research school commencing in November 2023 comprises a minimum total of 8 weeks of full-time studies (12 higher education credits) spread over two years, intended as a complement to mandatory courses required at the university where the student is registered.
The aim is to stimulate interdisciplinary research and provide a deeper knowledge and understanding of how register data can and should be used in research.

Apply to the national research school in clinical and translational cancer research (NatiOn)

The research school commencing in April 2024 comprises a total of 17 weeks of full-time studies (25.5 higher education credits) spread over two and a half years.
The programme concentrates primarily on molecular oncology and research methods for clinically active doctoral students in the cancer field. Applicants should have a clinical or translational project in cancer research.

Do you want to become a supervisor to a high school student?
|
|
Welcome to register your interest in becoming a supervisor to a research-interested high school student during the summer of 2023 (26 June – 28 July). Doctoral students who register their interest are presumed to have made an agreement with his/her supervisors and research group leader. An certain economic compensation is issued.
Tips: Supervising a high school student can be a great way to achieve the outcome for doctoral education regarding contributing to social development and supporting the learning of others.

Text matching and plagiarism checks
|
|
In order to create a learning experience regarding scientific writing KI's doctoral students run their literature review in the text matching system iThenticate in connection with the half-time review. When interpreting an iThenticate similarity report, you need to have good judgment, and to understand the difference between plagiarism, self-plagiarism and between poor and good quality. It is important that text matching systems are not seen as plagiarism detectors but that the result is put into context and that one understands what the text overlap implicates. KI therefore requires that doctoral students and supervisors discuss these issues.
The University Library (KIB) organizes workshops on the subject, the next workshop is held on 27 April 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.

The Swedish Migration Agency is changing its practice regarding studies abroad
|
From the autumn semester 2023, the fee for opponents will be increased to SEK 15,000
|
|
It is important for the quality of public defences at KI that the university can attract the best suited opponents, and that these have time to carry out the assignment with high quality. The fee has been unchanged since 2011 and the background to the decision to raise the level from SEK 10,000 to SEK 15,000 from the autumn semester 2023 is that the current fee has been judged to be low in relation to the scope of the assignment, which may send incorrect signals about the scope of the assignment.
For public defences during the spring semester 2023, a fee of SEK 10,000 is paid to the opponent.

Doctoral education statistics from KI’s annual report 2022

The total number of active doctoral students during the spring semester 2022 was 2163. 390 doctoral degrees and 2 licentiate degrees were issued during 2022. 399 persons were admitted to doctoral education, of which 63 % were women.
