A WORD FROM THE UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT
|
Conference on sustainable development – how you can contribute
KI’s second conference on sustainable development is to take place on 17 November. The event makes an important contribution to attaining the global sustainable development goals (SDGs) as set out in the UN’s Agenda 2030 and that form the basis of KI’s own Strategy 2030. The theme of this year’s conference is the route from basic research to better health for all – and how to make sure innovations reach those in need. Take this opportunity to learn more about the SDGs and to hear about KI researchers’ SDG challenges and related research. Amongst the participants will be Ulrika Modéer, deputy Secretary General of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Michaela Vallin, Agenda 2030 coordinator at KI. This is a full-day conference that will focus on how you as a researcher at KI can contribute to sustainable development. See full program and sign up here.
Global democracy in crises threatens academic freedom
We’re seeing more alarming signals that more people around the world are questioning evidence-based knowledge and academic freedom, while conspiracy theories and “alternative facts” are gaining ground in public opinion. The negative trend can be tied to the increase in threats against scientists and universities. The tragic consequences that KI professor Jonas F Ludvigsson suffered after having taken part in the public debate on the pandemic are an example of this. Unfortunately he is not the only victim – the situation is no different in many other comparable countries. What’s particularly serious is the lack of support reported by many scientists who have been subjected to such behaviour. KI has set up an international advisory group to strengthen KI’s geopolitical knowledge and global initiatives.

We are now taking the next step to develop internal support structures that allow questions of democratic values and academic freedom to be a natural part of everyday research activities.
