|
Höjda krav för permanent uppehållstillstånd försvårar
De höjda kraven för permanent uppehållstillstånd i förslaget till ny migrationslag kan försvåra för KI:s doktorander och forskare. KI har framfört synpunkter till utbildningsdepartementet avseende lagförslaget som innebär att kunskaper i svenska språket kan komma att krävas för att få permanent uppehållstillstånd i Sverige efter fyra år. Det är ett förslag och inget beslut är fattat, men den nya lagen föreslås träda i kraft redan den 20 juli. För att se till att dessa grupper får förutsättningar att uppfylla kraven hade lärosätena behövt framförhållning och möjlighet att under en övergångsperiod göra undantag, så att doktorander inte riskerar utvisning direkt efter sin disputation. KI:s doktorander och postdoktorer erbjuds möjlighet att kostnadsfritt gå en kurs i svenska språket (läs mer nedan).
Distansundervisning fram till sommaren och fokus på att få ut studenterna i arbetslivet
I närmare ett år har i stort sett all undervisning vid KI skett på distans med undantag för vissa praktiska moment och examinationer. Distansundervisningen har precis (rektorsbeslut 9 mars) förlängts till den 6 juni 2021. Tiden vid universitet eller högskola är normalt sett en period i livet som brukar vara fylld av inte bara hårt arbete utan också många roliga sociala aktiviteter. I stället har våra studenter haft en mycket prövande tid. Studenter, lärare och andra medarbetare vid KI har alla gjort remarkabla insatser och uppoffringar.
Till sommaren är det KI:s högsta prioritet att studenterna ska kunna få sin examen för att kunna komma ut i arbete och bidra i de viktiga professioner som de utbildats inom. Hur väl de behövs i vårt samhälle har varit påtagligt i det här läget. Vidare besked inför höstens planering av utbildningen väntas komma i april. Annars är det nu liksom tidigare av största vikt att vi fortsatt visar stort tålamod och uppmuntrar varandra att fortsätta att hålla ut. KI:s forskare och lärare beredda att bidra till klimatarbetet genom minskat resande
Rektor har beslutat om en klimatstrategi vars övergripande mål är att KI ska halvera sina utsläpp av växthusgaser till 2030 och kraftigt öka sina utbildnings- och forskningsinsatser relaterat till klimatförändringar och hälsa. Klimatstrategin tydliggör hur KI kan lämna ett bidrag till en mer hållbar värld genom att agera ansvarsfullt i verksamheten och bidra i det globala arbetet.

I en enkät som genomfördes bland KI:s forskare och lärare under hösten framkom att omkring hälften av de cirka 1000 svarande kunde ersätta 50 procent av sina resor med digitala verktyg. Enligt de svarande kunde främst administrativa möten ersättas med digitala lösningar. Möjligheten att skapa nya kontakter och nätverka gjorde att fysiska möten ansågs svåra att helt ersätta. En handlingsplan kommer nu att tas fram med konkreta åtgärder inom allt från inköp av varor och tjänster till att minska koldioxidutsläppen från resor. Handlingsplanen kommer att hjälpa dig att hålla koll på hur du kan bidra till att minska KI:s klimatavtryck.

Förslag att förnya rektor
Ole Petter Ottersens uppdrag

|
En valkommitté som har utsetts av konsistoriet kommer att föreslå hörandeförsamlingen att förnya rektors uppdrag med ytterligare ett år, till och med
28 februari 2023. Förslaget läggs fram i mars/april och ska sedan beslutas av konsistoriet som därefter skickar förslaget till regeringen för beslut.

Distansundervisningen förlängs vårterminen ut
|
|
Undervisningen vid KI ska ges på distans fram till 6 juni 2021, undantag är praktiska moment och examinationer som inte går att genomföra på distans med bibehållen kvalitet. Beslut för hösten beräknas komma under april.

|
|
|
|
|
|
Gratis svenskakurser för doktorander och postdoktorer
|
|
Enligt ett nytt lagförslag kan kunskaper i svenska språket komma att krävas för att en doktorand eller forskare ska kvalificera sig för permanent uppehållstillstånd i Sverige efter fyra år (se inledningen). Alla doktorander och postdoktorer på KI erbjuds sedan tidigare möjlighet att gå en kurs i svenska språket arrangerad av Folkuniversitetet utan kostnad. Nya kurser på nivåerna A1, A2 och B1 startar i april 2021. Gratis svenskakurser erbjuds även av exempelvis SIFA (Stockholms intensivsvenska för akademiker) och SFI (svenska för invandrare).

Nytt gemensamt centrum för precisionsmedicin
|
|
KI, Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset och Region Stockholm har tillsammans arbetat för att öka takten när det gäller införandet av precisionsmedicin, vilket i korthet innefattar diagnostik, behandling och uppföljning vid rätt tidpunkt och anpassad efter patientens individuella förutsättningar. I samarbetet har etableringen av ett virtuellt precisionsmedicinskt centrum prioriterats.

KI-nytt är ett internt nyhetsbrev som ska ge alla medarbetare en kort introduktion i aktuella universitetsövergripande frågor. Nyhetsbrevet tar upp frågor, bevakar beslut och pågående diskussioner i fakultetsnämnden, kommittéerna för forskarutbildning, forskning, utbildning samt andra beslutande organ inom KI. Stricter criteria for permanent residency causes problems
The stricter criteria for obtaining permanent residency contained in the new migration bill can make life more difficult for KI’s doctoral students and researchers. KI has expressed its views to the Ministry of Education and Research on the proposals, which will make permanent residency in Sweden after four years conditional on knowledge of Swedish. It is a proposal and no decision has been made, but the new law is proposed to come into effect on 20 July. To make sure that these groups have the opportunity to meet the demand, universities would have needed time to plan and the option to make exemptions during a transitional period to prevent doctoral students being deported after graduation. A free Swedish course is available to KI’s doctoral students and postdocs (find out more below).
Distance teaching until the summer and a focus on getting students out into the employment market
For almost a year now, virtually all teaching at KI has been done online, with the exception of certain practicals and exams. Distance teaching has recently (as per the President’s decision of 9 March) been extended to 6 June 2021. Normally, university is a time not only of hard work but also of social activities. Instead, our students have had a very trying time, but along with the KI faculty and staff have made remarkable efforts and sacrifices.
It is top priority at KI to have our students graduate so that they can enter the employment market and contribute to the important professions in which they have been trained and educated. The present circumstances have shown just how much they are needed. Further information ahead of this autumn’s programme planning is expected in April. The President has decided on a climate strategy with an overarching goal to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and to greatly increase education and research on climate change and health. The climate strategy makes it clearer how KI can help to build a more sustainable world by acting responsibly and contributing to the global environmental efforts. In a survey of KI’s researchers and teachers last autumn, it emerged that around half of the 1,000 or so respondents were prepared to replace 50 per cent of their travel with digital tools, especially when it came administrative meetings. The opportunity to make new contacts and network made, in their view, physical meetings hard to replace.
A plan of action will now be drawn up with concrete measures concerning everything from the procurement of goods and services to the reduction of CO2 from transport. The plan will help you keep a check on how you can help reduce KI’s climate footprint.

Proposal to extend Ole Petter Ottersen’s presidential term
|
|
An election committee appointed by the University Board (Konsistoriet) will be proposing to the Consultative College that his presidency be extended by one year until 28 February 2023. The proposal will be submitted in March/April for decision by the board before being passed to the government for decision.
|

|
|
|
|
Distance teaching extended until end of spring term
|
|
KI president has decided to extend distance teaching at the university until 6 June, with the exception of practical activities and exams that cannot be done remotely without compromising quality. The decision about the autumn will be made in April.
|

|
|
|
Free Swedish courses for doctoral students and postdocs
|
|
According to a recently tabled bill, knowledge of Swedish might be a condition for permanent residency in Sweden (as mentioned in the introduction). All doctoral students and postdocs at KI have been offered free courses in Swedish arranged by Folkuniversitetet. New courses at levels A1, A2 and B1 will be starting in April 2021. Free Swedish courses are also offered by other educational establishments, such as SIFA (Intensive studies in Swedish for adults with an academic background) and SFI (Swedish for immigrants).

New joint centre for precision medicine
|
|
KI, Karolinska University Hospital and Region Stockholm have been working together to speed up the introduction of precision medicine, which basically comprises diagnosis, treatment and follow-up at the right time, adapted to each patient’s personal circumstances. Their efforts have given priority to the establishment of a virtual precision medicine centre.

|
|

|
KI Newsletter is an internal newsletter that briefs all members of staff on current issues of concern to the university as a whole. The newsletter addresses issues and covers the decisions and discussions of KI’s decision-making bodies, including the faculty board and the committees for doctoral education, research and education.
