A WORD FROM THE UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT
|
Pomp and circumstance at the conferment ceremony – congratulations to KI’s new doctors, jubilee doctors and honorary doctors!
It was a very moving experience to attend another two formal conferment ceremonies in Stockholm City Hall on 11 and 12 November as KI’s new doctors received their diplomas and we paid tribute to our jubilee doctors and celebrated our new honorary doctors. A hearty congratulations to one and all! The two evenings were conducted by KI’s Unit for Academic Ceremonies. Please find pictures from the ceremonies and take part of the president's opening speech from 12 November.
Moving on at KI after COP 26 – you, too, can do your bit
Last Saturday saw the conclusion of the United Nations Climate Change Conference – COP26 – at which the countries that had ratified the UN Convention on Climate Change decided, amongst other things, to stick to the 1.5 degree target. Another important outcome of the conference is that all countries are bound to present a report of their climate activities every year instead of every five, the intention being that this will spur them on to make greater efforts. Contributing to the sustainability goals of Agenda 2030 is a vital part of KI’s strategy. KI’s Environment and Climate Action Plan 2021–2024 sets out KI’s climate strategy and is part of our environmental management system. The next step is that the departments will now, with the assistance of their local environment representatives, be producing their own action and activity plans. Climate transition concerns the future of humanity but can also bring direct health gains here and now. Read the articles on climate-smart health and on KI’s climate network about how all of us at KI can make a contribution to climate gains.

This year’s Nobel Lectures explains sensations that we take for granted – a date for your diaries: 7 December
The 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian. At this year’s Nobel Lecture, the laureates explain their discoveries of how the nervous system senses heat, cold and mechanical stimuli. Their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch explain a fundamental aspect of our ability to perceive our surroundings. Don’t miss the Nobel Lectures on 7 December.

Decision on the issue of naming on Campus Solna
|
Following a thorough investigation and the collation of an internal survey, the president of Karolinska Institutet (KI), Professor Ole Petter Ottersen, has decided to change the names of one of the university’s halls, propose name changes for one building and two roads on Campus Solna, and amend the naming principles. The debate on KI’s historical heritage has raged in recent years. This applies to the change of name of hall Retzius, Retzius väg and the Retzius laboratory on the Solna campus, and also "von Eulers väg". KI also has set up and tasked a work group with, amongst other things, proposing ways in which to deal with road names, hall names and historical monuments (e.g. busts) in the future.

The report “Teaching and examination in digital environments: follow-up of teachers' and students' experiences” covers the academic year 2020-2021. The report includes opinions from both teachers and students which will now be used to further develop teaching methods.
