A WORD FROM THE UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT
|
KI programmes popular
By the close of this autumn’s round of academic applications on 19 April, over 22,000 applications had been made to KI’s beginners’ programmes. KI’s medical programme is the most popular course of study in the country. The proportion of first-choice applicants is higher than both Stockholm and Lund universities’ law programmes, which come in second and third place, respectively. KI’s psychology, nursing and dentistry programmes also top the list of first-choice applications; in fact, the dentistry programme has been ranked number one dentistry programme in the world for the third year in a row. Persistent strategic work and many focused and dedicated staff and students are to thank for this position, which serves to increase the programme’s global draw and is important for student exchanges and research collaborations. You can read more about the QS world university rankings in the field of life sciences and medicine.
KI congratulates Uganda’s Makerere University on its first centenary
This year, Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, is to celebrates its 100th anniversary. For 20 years our partnership has enriched our respective universities, and we are particularly proud to have founded the joint Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health, which is an important step to the realisation of our Strategy 2030. We hope that, together, we can continue developing the project, which not only generates new insights but also brings us closer to our vision of better health for all. KI currently has a delegation in place in Kampala to cement the partnership with our colleagues at Makerere University.
Seminar on academic freedom and international collaborations, 12 May
KI is arranging a seminar on 12 May on how research is being impacted by a world marked by war, conflict and declining democracy. Academic freedom is essential to societal development and it is clear that it is going to take more than new guidelines – we also need to take personal responsibility. Science fuels societal development in general and it is vital that new knowledge and new findings can be created with researchers allowed to run with their own ideas, thoughts and objectives.

Academic freedom also means that researchers must, when necessary, be able to criticise the government from the vantage point of their own particular discipline. The forthcoming seminar will be covering these three areas: academic freedom and institutional autonomy, internationalisation and the global democratic crisis. Sign up here and take part in the discussion.

Checklist for annual follow-up
|
All doctoral students and supervisors are required to have an annual follow-up meeting, during which the students’ individual study plans (ISP's) are reviewed and updated. Making time for reflection over student progress, in terms of both learning and research project, is a sound basis for high quality doctoral education and for ensuring that the degree objectives can be achieved on time. It also means that any problems there might be can be identified and ironed out.
Since the introduction of digital ISPs, instructions and a checklist have been produced for the annual follow-up that everyone is recommended to read.
