A word from the Chairman

Dear Colleagues,

Our department remains very strong: two of three ERC Advanced grants went to MBB — congratulations Gonçalo and Björn! — and not only that, but Molly Stevens was awarded the very prestigious Novo Nordisk Prize 🎉.

But to stay at the forefront of science, one of the most important activities in our department is the recruitment of new group leaders. During the past couple of months, we had the pleasure of inviting the four top candidates for our MBB Frontier Grants. We saw great science, across multiple fields and with a lot of stimulating discussions.

Not least, it was great to see so many people joining the public talks, and so many interactions across units during the process. The final outcome will be announced at the department council meeting (20th April at 3 pm in the Eva & Georg Klein lecture hall).

Sincerely,
Sten

Start planning for your summer holiday

It's time to plan for the summer holidays at your division.

The immediate manager is responsible for ensuring that all employees, including those with standard vacation, take their vacation days during the year.

General about vacation
Everyone has a right to four weeks of consecutive vacation during the summer months.
A minimum of 20 days of vacation must be taken out during the calendar year.
You can save a maximum of 30 vacation days.

Read more about vacation rules here

For all employees with standard vacation

Starting this year, vacation days and payment of vacation supplement for employees with standard vacation will be registered only on two days per year, Midsummer Day and Christmas Day.

However, the vacation supplement will still be paid for the total number of vacation days the employee is entitled to, spread between those two days.

Employees with standard vacation who are on parental leave or on sick leave need to notify HR at MBB when they want to take out their vacation so that it corresponds with the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan).

New technology maps where and how cells read their genome

Photo: Getty

A new study published in Nature reports that a technology known as spatial omics can be used to map simultaneously how genes are switched on and off and how they are expressed in different areas of tissues and organs.

This improved technology, developed by researchers at MBB, Gonçalo Castelo-Branco Group and reserachers at Yale University, could shed light on the development of tissues, as well as on certain diseases and how to treat them.

For this study, the researchers adapted and combined their previously developed techniques to map the epigenome and the transcriptome, and applied these techniques to mouse brains and human brain tissue.

“Now that we can combine the two, we can see both the mechanisms of how the genes are switched on and off, as well as the result,” says Gonçalo Castelo-Branco.

Three KI researchers awarded ERC Advanced Grants

Three professors at Karolinska Institutet – Gonçalo Castelo-Branco, Maria Eriksson and Björn Högberg – have been awarded ERC Advanced Grants, one of the most prestigious and competitive EU funding schemes.

The funds, totaling more than 8 million euros, will support the use of innovative basic research methods to further our understanding of disease mechanisms and the tiniest building blocks of DNA.

Get to know your new colleagues

Mattia Zaghi has joined Gonçalo Castelo-Branco group as postdoctoral researcher.

He obtained his PhD degree in molecular medicine at Vita-Salute San Raffaele (Milan, Italy) were he studied the molecular basis of rare developmental disease (Schinzel-Giedion syndrome).

In Castelo-Branco’s group he will focus on developing new technologies to analyze cell-free chromatin in plasma and crebrospinal fluids of multiple sclerosis patients.

Outside work, he enjoys watching basketball, motorsports, training in the gym and learning different things that are not sciece-related.

Jiao Zhu has joined Onur Dagliyan group as a postdoctoral researcher.

Jiao has a molecular biology background, and has worked on the function of the proteins in animals since 2013.

Jiao is currently working on the project that involves engineering proteins which will enable the investigation of molecular mechanisms of neuronal circuits.

Jiao Zhu

Batuhan Uygar, has joined the group of Onur Dagliyan as his first PhD student.

Batuhan did his M.Sc in Biomedicine Programme at Karolinska Institutet. After the degree he worked in the industry and also in different research groups on neural circuitry and behavior that took him to his current PhD position where he is focusing on molecular modulations of neural circuits responsible for learning.

Outside the lab, I enjoy doing meditation, skiing, going theatre and photography.

Lauren Phipps has joined Ulrika Marklund’s group as a postdoctoral researcher.

Lauren obtained her PhD in Developmental Biology from the University of Manchester (UK), where she researched neural cell fate decisions during spinal cord regeneration in Xenopus tropicalis.

In Ulrika’s group, she will be characterising neurogenesis in the adult mouse gut at the epigenetic and transcriptomic levels, assessing which adult enteric cells are able to generate new neurons, which neuronal subtypes are generated after injury and whether this process can be improved experimentally to restore function.

Outside of the lab, she enjoys climbing, hiking and painting.
