"...there must be a paradigm shift in reframing the higher education curriculum for the 21st century that is globally engaged and locally integrated. This paradigm shift requires strategic planning processes for internationalization to account for global environmental challenges, fast societal changes, changing market and demographic environments, planetary citizenship and peaceful, prosperous and sustainable living."

“Just would like to share some impact and the importance of what we are doing within the work of Linnaeus-Palme and Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health (CESH) spreading the research and the work we are doing in a local hospital more in the rural area today. The lecture participants, about 40- 50 people were hospital staff, Kenya Medical Training College students, students from Bristol and Denmark. I was talking of the importance of healthy lifestyle and prevention and secondary prevention of the NCDs in connection with the SDGs, giving the example from the research we are doing at our department at KI. I also talked to the administrator’s office that has started developing the physiotherapy and occupational therapy department. We also discussed the need of a lifestyle clinic. They have started the planning process. I hope you are all fine, and will be home soon.”

Financial support for incoming students from Uganda

Makerere University (MAK) in Uganda is a strategically important partner for KI. Several of KI's study programmes have ongoing projects within the Linnaeus-Palme programme (LP) with the university, which will lack funding to continue due to UHR's announcement to end the exchange programme. In light of this, the committee for higher education (KU), through its Chair for Internationalisation of Education Jonas Sundbäck, has decided to allocate funds for two incoming students per study programme for four weeks exchange, hoping that the student exchange in both directions will continue.

Mandatory teaching in English

Teaching in English has been an important part of the internationalisation of the study programmes since the action plan for internationalisation was implemented in 2014-2018, and continues to be so. However, several study programmes have asked for more flexibility and a clearer purpose linked to KI Strategy 2030. The working group for internationalisation (under KU) chaired by Jonas Sundbäck, has now put forward a report and a proposal that teaching in English should be mandatory in education on the first and second cycle. The proposal that was adopted by KU on November 17 offers more flexibility and has above all focused on relevance and progression. The decision has been communicated to the study programmes’ "utbildnings- and programnämnder" and “internationaliseringsansvariga”.

Responsible internationalisation - from the Presidents blog

KI participates in educational and research collaborations and receives students and researchers from all over the world. While extensive international cooperation enriches and empowers KI's operations, the importance of conducting international cooperation responsibly is increasing. Responsible internationalisation is a term which describes a strategy to minimize the risks and to increase the outcomes of collaborations with international partners. The president recently published a blog post on the topic and useful links and information for staff can be found on ki.se.
