Cancer Research KI awards the Bridging Grant at the consolidator level for a junior researcher

The purpose of the Bridging Grant is to give the most prominent young researchers at KI the opportunity to consolidate their research broaden their activities. To read more on the Bridging grant, please visit the website.
In the field of cancer research, Cancer Research KI awarded Linda Lindström, Associate Professor in Cancer Epidemiology and Group Leader at the Department of Oncology and Pathology. The title of the project is "Identification of key factors influencing the risk of late metastatic disease in breast cancer."
Cancer Research KI reached out to Linda Lindström to ask about her project. You can read more on the Cancer Research KI website.

The Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital strengthen their relationships with the National Institute of Oncology (Hungary) in cancer research and education

In 2021, Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the field of research and education with the National Institute of Oncology (NIO), Budapest, Hungary. The MoU applies to everything from student exchanges, joint courses and conferences, to research collaborations at various levels. The parties undertake to comply with international principles and agreements on academic freedom while aiming to strengthen all parties’ activities in the fields of education, clinical oncology and cancer research. The collaboration is managed through Cancer Research KI and the Karolinska Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

National Institute of Oncology (NIO) profile and strengths

NIO is the only OECI-accredited Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Eastern Europe. The institute's activities include care development, registry coordination and research in all fields of cancer for the whole of Hungary, with around 10 million people. NIO specializes in cancer biomarkers, the national patient registry in Hungary, radiology and radiotherapy. Approximately 1000 people work at NIO, and there are 350 patient beds. Redox biology, genomics and cancer genomics are strong fields of research conducted in 8 departments, and NIO performs many clinical trials.

Beating Cancer Plan and Cancer Mission Initiative

Europe’s new “Beating Cancer Plan” and “Cancer Mission” initiatives, with a total budget of ca. €4 billion, encourage partnerships of cancer centres and researchers between Western and Eastern Europe, where the MoU can form a good foundation for further collaborations between Stockholm and Budapest. Joint applications for financial support of exchange and collaborations between the institutions have been submitted, and hopefully, the coming years will enable us to fill the MoU with many different interesting and productive activities.

Karolinska Comprehensive Cancer Center leads “Karolinska Clinical Cancer Talks”, where distinguished cancer researchers give talks on topics in cancer research for cancer researchers and clinicians in cancer care. While the topics may be highly specialized, the presentations should be understandable for all with training in cancer biology, oncology, and oncologic surgery. The talks are given in English.
