Cities, Districts and the Renovation Wave

As part of the EU Green Deal, the European Commission has announced a Renovation Wave initiative to boost the energy efficiency and the renovation of the building stock in Europe.

Considering that the European Council underlined that district heating and cooling (DHC) networks should be included in the scope of the Renovation Wave, and that cities are at the forefront of the energy transition, we ask:
- What can we expect from this communication?
- What could be the impact of this initiative in the deployment of sustainable H&C in cities?

Looking forward to the Fall

The hot summer days have passed, but we’ll keep up the heat throughout the fall and cool down as necessary

We at the Celsius Initiative are happy to welcome you back after the summer holidays and present you with our plans for the fall.

We’re looking forward to a fall filled with webinars, interesting articles, increased action in the forerunner groups and an ever-growing Celsius Toolbox. This month we’re focusing on the EU Renovation Wave and the impacts it will have on cities and regions striving towards a decarbonised building stock. Don't miss next week's online workshop!

In October we will shift or focus towards district cooling, an ever so interesting topic. In November we will look at how cities can move away from fossil based energy sources. Towards the end of the year we are planning to host the annual Celsius Summit. Considering the current situation in the world, the exact forms of the summit have not yet been decided, but you can rest assured that we will make it happen!

City Stories

Riga, making a difference in the Baltic countries

With about 1.1 million MWh heat production and considering the global importance of environmental protection, and in order to contribute to achieving the goals of the Latvian national energy and climate policy, “RĪGAS SILTUMS” continues investing in environmentally friendly projects.

Database for interactive webtools and GIS maps.

A good and interactive website is a helpful tool in exploring the energy situation in Europe. The Energy Interactive Webtools and GIS Maps Database collects useful web applications and interactive maps for the study of sustainable energy systems.

About the Database

How to plan and optimise production of district heat

In general, optimisation is about finding the best available values given certain limitations and functions. All processes and systems, such as a district heating system, can be optimised to achieve the best possible values, based on predetermined settings.

The City Finance Lab calls on urban leaders to help build back better.

Cities can lead the way in championing a green recovery, and in shaping our societies into ones that are sustainable, resilient, and inclusive. They have the most to gain from channelling finance into urban climate action – and the most to lose for failing to do so. This is why the City Finance Lab is launching its 2020 call for proposals to help increase investments in projects that turn pressing urban challenges into low-carbon opportunities.

Local Leaders on the Front Lines

Many European cities have inspiring stories to tell about how they plan their heat transition towards a 100% green, reliable system based on local sources and heat networks.

During this webinar we heard from five remarkable cities from all corners of Europe, from very advanced decarbonised systems going the extra mile, to retrofitting and decarbonising existing networks, to getting a new network started.
