Welcome back to campus / LIME 20 years / Mental health / Employee survey / Meet George Keel

A few words from the Head of Department

Dear LIME colleagues,

After two years of a fluctuating pandemic, we now enter a new phase with essentially all restrictions lifted. I think and hope that this coming year, in addition to most things becoming more normal, also will be characterized by several important lessons from the pandemic. Not least important is to reflect on the suffering and loss of lives. Also, we should learn from the more flexible way of working which, balanced right, in many cases can enhance efficiency and improve individual working environment.

In March the new Employee survey (Medarbetarundersökning) will be conducted. The results and findings will be very important to further improve the work environment at LIME and KI as a whole.

I very much look forward to meeting many of you at LIME breakfasts, the LIME retreat in April and other settings!

Yours, Carl Johan

Carl Johan Sundberg
Head of the Department

In every LIME Newsletter we´ll interview one or two co-workers to learn more about their work and what´s important to them.

Meet George Keel, a hospital and health care costing specialist and health economist, former doctoral student at LIME, now working at IHE and affiliated to LIME.

In 2020 you defended your thesis ”Counting what counts: time-driven activity-based costing in health care” and now you are an affiliated researcher here at LIME. What projects have you been involved in at LIME since then? What project(s) are you working on right now?

- Since completing my thesis, I have begun directing the Advanced Course in Health Economics within the Health Economics, Policy, and Management Master’s program. I have also worked together with other course directors in the HEPM program to innovate our approaches to distance/online learning during the pandemic.
- Currently I am wrapping up work with my research group to get the final paper of my thesis published. We aim to submit in February. I am also supervising/co-supervising seven master’s students within four projects within the HEPM program.

If you could choose a dream project to work on, what would it be? And why?

- To be honest, I have no exciting answer here. Dream projects for me are those where there is a challenge to be solved that would improve circumstances for people and society, and where my skillset is ideal for developing a solution. I am a hospital and health care costing specialist and health economist, so any circumstance where a better understanding of costs and their relationships to outcomes will be useful for patients and society.

Some say it´s weird to be an Englishman in New York. How is it to be an American in Stockholm?

- I like to think I am not your typical American, but then again others around me may see me as the quintessential American. My Swedish remains at a five-year-old level while I’ve lived here over 10 years. Despite this, I’ve found myself feeling more at home in Sweden than I ever did in the United States. I would need more space to explain, but it ties into my tendency to keep religion at arm’s length, my values surrounding the importance of social support, and my appreciation for societies that are pleasantly both simple and functional. I can hear Swedes laughing, but I guess everything being relative makes everything funny.

- I do often feel a deep sense of discoordination in Swedish society. As I didn’t grow up here, I have lack all the nuances of society that are collected through childhood. But, I’ve always been one who tends to adapt, which as its positive and negative sides, one positive being it makes life easier for an expat.

… and at last: have you discovered anything new about yourself during the last two years of pandemic?

- I have developed a profound disinterest in social media and I am confident now in my ability to effectively teach courses at a distance, but also learned the difficult-to-explicate value and nuance of teaching in person.

- Pandemics are a strangely ideal time to raise a new baby, as the FOMO premise associated with new parents is removed almost entirely.

Who do you want to meet next? Send Marie Lind an e-mail with your suggestions.

NEWS FROM LIME'S CENTRES AND UNITS

Specific news submitted from all of LIME's centres/divisions & units/research groups.

HEALTH ECONOMICS AND POLICY

Cecilia Dahlgren, Fanny Goude, Matilda Hagman and Sofia Sveréus from the Health Economics and Policy Research Group have recently published two reports for Region Stockholm in which they investigate the use of telemedicine in primary healthcare during first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, using linked registry data from Region Stockholm, Region Sörmland, Region Jönköping and Statistics Sweden; Telemedicine in primary healthcare during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic

The results show that the pandemic served as a catalyst for telemedicine consultations in primary healthcare. The number of telemedicine consultations increased dramatically during the first wave of the pandemic, while the number of face-to-face consultations simultaneously decreased. However, the use of telemedicine was unevenly distributed across age groups. Older individuals, who had the largest decrease in face-to-face consultations, had the lowest use of telemedicine. Contrarily, individuals in the age group 19-25 years increased their use of telemedicine consultations to the extent that their total number of primary healthcare consultations was higher in 2020 than in 2018.

The results further reveal differences between face-to-face consultations and telemedicine consultations regarding diagnoses and socioeconomic profile of the users. Diagnoses treated in telemedicine consultations differed substantially from those treated in face-to-face consultations. and individuals who were highly educated, had higher income, or were Swedish-born used telemedicine consultations to a larger extent than other groups. These socioeconomic differences however diminished somewhat since 2018.
