Newsletter from EfD

November 2023

Dear friends of EfD,

Welcome to a newsletter filled with activities from all of EfD’s pillars. There has been training on RCT research in Vietnam, relevant EU-funded research on sustainable consumption and production with our academic partner Wageningen U, on water investments in the Anthropocene, and adaptive agricultural investments in Tanzania. EfD research is also bolstered by improved data collection techniques and a new EfD seminar series. Last but not least, as always EfD does outreach. Here we have examples from Chile, Tanzania, Kenya, and the COP that starts this week. And don’t miss the thoughtful blog by Bishal Bharadwaj on what it takes for policy interventions to have an impact, including local academic capacity.

Enjoy!

Gunnar Köhlin, Director

Around the world, governments are fighting poverty, environmental degradation, and many other deprivations. Numerous policies and interventions are published every year: subsidies, promotion, social mobilization, and so on. Each policy looks great in writing, but many of them do not move at all. Check out this excellent blog post by EfD researcher Bishal Bharadwaj, who puts research in a relevant perspective!

Policy Nook — Policy Note: Benefit Cost Analysis of Water Investments in the Anthropocene

Water

Photo: Rony Michaud, Pixabay.

Water management is becoming increasingly challenging. The core problem is an old one: water scarcity will increase as demand rises due to population and economic growth. Higher temperatures, continental drying, higher evaporation, and non-stationary hydrology will add complexity. This policy note describes six key issues that analysts will need to rethink as they estimate the benefits and costs of policies, investments, and regulations designed to address water problems in the Anthropocene. The authors are EfD researchers Dale Whittington, Richard T. Carson, and Thomas Sterner and it was published in Water Economics and Policy. This is a must-read!

Adaptive investment with land tenure and weather risk: Behavioral evidence from Tanzania

Tea farmers

Many smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa face two risks: erratic weather patterns and insecure land tenure. These risks may interact increasingly as projections of more erratic weather make small-scale farming harder and the demand for rural land grows. This paper asks how farmers in Western Tanzania view these compound risks and how they affect their levels of investment in adaptive agricultural technologies and the demand for land certification. The study was published in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization. Check out this interesting paper!
