Newsletter from EfD
October 2022
|
Dear friends of EfD,
At our recent EfD Annual Meeting in Uganda, we spent much of our time discussing future joint work within our “collaborative programs”. These programs enable researchers from all over our global network to learn from each other and develop joint activities. They act both as “communities of practice” and as platforms for the joint implementation of multi-country programs. Here you can learn more about five of our collaborative programs and what their plans are for the future. You can also see their latest news and papers on their dedicated sites on our EfD website.
And then there is of course all the other news from this month including the formalization of our new academic partner Wageningen University, a look at our new internal Early Career Fellows program, and news on policy outreach and research.
Please enjoy and share the latest news and research from the EfD network!

The CMaR collaborative program (Sustainable Management of Coastal Marine Resources) widens its scope and becomes SCOPE. The new name stands for Sustainable Consumption and Production. While CMaR focused primarily on plastic pollution in the oceans, SCOPE will encompass three themes: Waste, sustainable lifestyles, and circular economy. The reshaped and renamed collaborative was presented in an open session at EfD’s Annual Meeting in Uganda. Learn more about their exciting work!

“Emissions pricing – not the only way, but the best way”

|
Emissions Pricing for Development, EPfD’s open session at the Annual Meeting drew large crowds and extra chairs had to be added to the Majestic Hall. Emissions pricing is not entirely uncontroversial, but its advocates are convinced that it’s the most efficient way to fight climate change. However, there are challenges that need to be addressed. Find out more about this!

Gender issues were scrutinized at the Annual Meeting

The collaborative program Women in Environmental Economics for Development, WinEED, held a well-attended open seminar at EfD’s Annual Meeting in Uganda. A large number of the participants were men, which shows that gender equality is not specifically a women’s issue, at least not in the EfD network. But a lot of work remains, even within EfD. Learn more about what is being done!

Sustainable use of the ”blue resources” is the goal of an EfD collaborative program
|

Fisheries and aquaculture contribute to about 260 million jobs globally. But the oceans, lakes, and rivers are under severe pressure. Pollution, overfishing, and poor governance are serious threats to biodiversity and the livelihoods of millions. The collaborative program Blue Resources for Development, BlueRforD, aims at addressing those problems.

EfD’s collaborative program Sustainable Energy Transition Initiative, SETI, had several activities at EfD’s Annual Meeting on September 22-26 in Kampala, Uganda. The question of how to achieve a sustainable energy transition is always high on the agenda in the EfD network and this year’s meeting was no exception.

Status and perspectives of Maasai women in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania
|

Within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) in Tanzania, most analyses and projects focus on Maasai men, who are cattle herders. In this paper, nine researchers describe livelihoods and well-being from the perspective of the Maasai women. Their life satisfaction is correlated with food security, clothing quality, and access to markets and social services, but not with family ownership of cattle, which is the most used metric of Maasai wealth. Their findings suggest potential improvement in NCA programs and provide a baseline to analyze the effects of any such changes in those programs from the perspective of Maasai women. Private benefits from ambient air pollution reduction policies – Evidence from the household heating stove replacement program in Chile
|

|
The researchers investigated the benefits of a program to improve ambient air quality during the winter in Chile by replacing inefficient wood-fired home heating stoves with more efficient pellet stoves. They found, among others, that the users of pellet stoves on average enjoy 14% lower indoor PM2.5 concentrations compared with those with traditional stoves. Lower-income and energy-poor households also receive much greater than average improvements in indoor air pollution than those with higher incomes. Read more about their interesting findings!

Global food price surge, in-kind transfers and household welfare: Evidence from India
|

|
EfD researcher Digvijay S. Negi studied the impact of high global rice and wheat prices on household welfare in India. He found, among other things, that net-producer households were able to maintain their spending and consumption of rice and wheat by decreasing the consumption of purchased rice and wheat and increasing the consumption of government-subsidized rice and wheat. Net consumers, on the other hand, experienced a decline in the total per capita consumption of rice and wheat even though they substituted their market purchases with homegrown produce and subsidized grains.
