Newsletter from EfD

February 2024

Dear friends of EfD,

In this month’s newsletter, you will first reconnect to one of the most influential research themes that EfD has had – the evaluation of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) in Costa Rica. This strand of research was started by Francisco Alpizar two decades ago and has since involved many domestic and international researchers in a series of peer-reviewed publications. It has also been very influential internationally in the design of similar programs. It’s an excellent example of how EfD works on long-term, insightful, high-quality research with broad policy impact. But the EfD universe is rich and diverse. You also find news on gender in India, carbon pricing in West Africa, climate adaptation in fish farming, and much more.

Enjoy!

Environmental economists from Makerere University have called on urban authorities to harness the abundant human and organic waste in the cities to produce biogas and organic fertilizers. They argue that while urbanization is a key driver of growth, unplanned, rapid urbanization and urban sprawl threaten to increase greenhouse emissions and vulnerability to climate change and other shocks.
