May 2024

Dear friends of EfD,

Welcome to the May edition of the EfD Newsletter. Once again we can treat you with updates from our global network including (i) policy engagement and outreach activities reported on energy in Ghana and Uganda, accompanied by an interesting blog on why men should engage in clean cooking decision-making (ii) news from the Inclusive Green Economy in Practice program both on the need for such a program (due to the knowledge gap on how to implement green economy policies) and that new IGE fellows are now being recruited to the program, (iii) yet another example of how Yonas Alem is training EfD researchers throughout the network – this time on RCT in Nigeria, and (iv) many interesting studies, both featured and listed below.

Enjoy!

Gender-differentiated impacts of salinity intrusion on agricultural production and food security – A study in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam

This study investigates the impacts of salinity intrusion on agricultural production and food security concerning the gender aspect. The authors find that high yield loss due to salinity leads to a significant reduction in income, food expenditure, and consumption of some main foods. Some impacts are different for male and female farmers. Local authorities should provide technical support and promote research to identify and introduce salt-tolerant varieties to farmers and spread the varieties to highly saline regions.

Insider perspectives on Southeast Asiaʼs clean energy transition

This paper offers essential insights into Southeast Asiaʼs transition to clean energy, a cornerstone for global climate objectives. Based on 27 interviews with regional energy and climate experts conducted between September 2022 and October 2023, the research distils key factors into 3Ds: Demanding, Doable, and Dependent. Highlighting these aspects would foster readiness, persuade stakeholders, and secure international support, all of which are pivotal for advancing the energy transition towards net‐zero emissions in Southeast Asia.
