In this edition of our newsletter, we remind you of EfD's 16th Annual Meeting in Uganda on September 22-26 by presenting an interview with one of the keynotes, Professor Michael Hanemann, an icon in Environmental Economics.
EfD is aiming to maintain our Annual Meeting as the largest and most vibrant conference on the application of Environmental Economics in the Global South. It is an open conference where you only pay actual costs, so we encourage everyone who is interested to attend to

EfD Central America researchers,Roger Madrigal, and Eduardo Pacay visited the Trifinio Region, where the territories of El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala meet. The purpose was to network and gather information on the feasibility of creating a water fund for the Lempa River basin.
A water fund is an innovative mechanism for the shared governance of a transboundary river basin. It has the potential to benefit thousands of vulnerable communities and productive sectors. Read more about this!

EfD Ethiopia

New project seeks solutions to mitigate climate change related conflicts through insurance

The Environment and Climate Research Center, ECRC, has garnered collaborative research funding for a project titled From Climate change to Conflict: Mitigation through insurance. The study will investigate, design, and test interventions that can be jointly implemented with insurance to strengthen any conflict-reducing effects or mitigate any conflict-aggravating effects of insurance. During the XV World Forestry Congress held in Seoul, Korea, at the beginning of May, a session called Harnessing the Communication Effect highlighted the role of communication in the forestry and environment sectors. Does participatory forest management increase forest resource use to cope with shocks?

The government of Ethiopia has extensively adopted participatory forest management (PFM) programs. However, there is very little empirical evidence on whether PFM practices in Ethiopia enhance the capacity of rural households to cope with shocks. EfD researchers Abebe D. Beyene, Alemu Mekonnen, Randall Bluffstone, and co-author Yemiru Tesfaye have looked into whether forest income and share of forest income are higher for PFM members than non-members when faced with shocks. Emissions trading with consignment auctions

EfD researcher Zhi Li and his co-author Da Zhang, and Xiliang Zhang have studied what emissions trading systems have the best effect when it comes to reducing emissions without getting harmful results for small firms. Their results provide insights on permit allocation designs when introducing emission trading systems, especially for developing countries that are pondering the balance between market efficiency and firms’ cost burden.

Events

From 2007 until 2019 the EfD Annual Meeting has evolved to become the largest and most vibrant conference in the Global South on the application of environmental and resource economics.
After two years of virtual meetings, we are now back to a real-life meeting. This time the conference is hosted by the EfD center at Makerere University which has promised us a beautiful venue on the shores of Lake Victoria near Kampala, Uganda.
The conference will follow our format of scientific and policy keynotes combined with thematic parallel sessions and workshops.
Training sessions and collaborative program meetings will be organized before and after the Annual Meeting.

Understanding the gender and climate change nexus

The International Economic Association, the United Nations Development Programme, and the World Bank Group are co-organizing a conference on Understanding the Gender and Climate Change Nexus virtually on November 15-17, 2022. The conference provides an opportunity for researchers to present the results of their research at the intersection of gender and climate change. This event also aims to serve as a platform for evidence-based policy dialogue.

EEPSEA Seed grants

The Economy & Environment Partnership for Southeast Asia (EEPSEA) announces a call for concept notes for a seed grant which provides researchers in Southeast Asia the chance to develop a full research proposal in preparation to submit to potential funding agencies for larger research grant applications.

Research topics that apply the tools of economics and trans-disciplinary approach in the analysis of policy-relevant environmental challenges are invited.

IDRC Women, Peace and Security Award

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) has launched an annual Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Research Award to advance knowledge of the lessons learned, good practices, achievements, emerging issues as well as the outstanding challenges in implementing the WPS agenda, at local, regional, and global levels.
The theme of this year’s WPS Research Award is Gender, Climate Change, and Conflict.
