Newsletter from EfD
January 2022
|
Dear friend of Environment for Development,
In this newsletter, you will learn about research that presents a strong case for stopping the building of more coal power plants and why we have to get rid of toxic chemicals in plastics.
Research that is relevant for policymaking is what EfD is all about. And behind every impact on policies, there are usually many years of persistent work and meetings with decision-makers and civil servants. So you will also read about successful outreach activities at our EfD Centers around the world.
This and much more will be covered in this newsletter!
A great example of academy-policy interaction is the Inclusive Green Economy program, where a new group of participants are now enrolling in the 2022 training program, while the previous participants will form a strong alumni network. You will read more about the IGE program in upcoming newsletters. Stay tuned!
You receive this newsletter because we believe that you share our passion for the environment and development! It provides you with the latest news and research from our network.

Economical factors are often used as an excuse for continued investments in coal power plants. But EfD researchers E. Somanathan and Shoibal Chakravarty argue in a study that backing the coal plants expansion policy is flawed. They outline the private and external costs of electricity from coal, solar, and wind using the most recent data and literature.

Thousands of toxic chemicals can be found in plastics on the market. If plastic containing toxic chemicals is collected and recycled, the chemicals can spread into new plastic products. In a new project, EfD researcher Daniel Slunge with co-authors will investigate what the toxic substances are, how they affect the environment, and how decision-making processes can be improved to get safer recycling of plastics.

One program to promote forest protection in developing countries is the REDD+, an incentive-based and demand-driven approach to promote forest protection in developing countries. In a book chapter called Forest Resource Use and Management in Nigeria: Implications for Implementation of REDD+ for Climate Change Mitigation in West Africa, EfD researchers NwaJesus Anthony Onyekuru and Eberechukwu Johnpaul Ihemezie, and their co-author Rob Marchant examine how Nigeria’s forest governance and land-use system, forest resource use, and forest management practices can affect the successful implementation of the REDD+ program.
