The social cost of methane

Screen shot of participants

A rapid and sustained reduction of methane emissions has been proposed recently as a key strategy to meet the climate targets of the Paris Agreement. The social cost of methane (SCM), which expresses the climate damage cost associated with an additional metric ton of methane emitted, is a metric that can be used to design policies to reduce the emissions of this gas. EfD researchers Daniel Johansson and Thomas Sterner with co-authors Christian Azar and Jorge García Martín aim to explain the real social cost of methane in this paper, published in Climatic Change.

Development of a novel hand cleansing product for low-income contexts: The case of tab soap

Different types of soap

A research participant ranks the products from the most modern (left) to the least (right). Photo: The research team.

Handwashing with soap is a widely advocated public health measure, but seldom practiced, partly because it is often difficult (especially outside of rich Western country contexts) to make both soap and water readily available in relevant situations. This study, by EfD Researcher Winnie Costancia Muangi and co-authors Edward Brial, Robert Aunger and Weston Baxter, used both Behaviour Centred Design and Human Centred Design to guide the development of a novel hand-cleansing technology appropriate for the context of post-toilet hand cleansing in resource-poor societies. The study was published in PLOS ONE.

Passive participation in illegal fishing and the welfare of fishmongers in a developing country

Photo: Pixabay. (These women are not involved in illegal fisheries and are not related to the study).

Socio-economic studies of fisheries crime in developing countries have focused on the fishers (primarily men) and neglected the fishmongers (typically women), who are passive participants in illegal fishing. What motivates fishmongers to be involved in this business? And what are the policy implications? EfD Researchers Wisdom Akpalu, Godwin K. Vondolia, Phillip K. Adom, and their co-author Dorcas Asaah Peprah look into those questions in an EfD Discussion Paper. Read this interesting paper!

Special Issue: Focus on Understanding the Gender and Climate Change Nexus

Vulnerabilities and risks from climate change vary by gender. The same is true for individuals' opportunities to take advantage of and contribute to the green transition agenda. While the research on the nexus between gender and climate change is growing, the scale and urgency of the challenge that humanity faces calls for additional rigorous evidence that can better inform policy design.
