Much research has been dedicated to economic and social inequality, but this study by EfD researchers Jorge A. Bonilla, Claudia Aravena, and co-author Ricardo Morales-Betancourt focuses on environmental inequality. They found that the allocation of air quality across Bogotá is highly unequal, exceeding economic or social inequality. Evidence also indicates that economic, social, and air quality disparities intersect. They have, in addition, found which policy is the most cost-effective in reducing this inequality. The study was published in Environmental and Resource Economics. Read this interesting paper!

Changing people's attitudes is an important first step in addressing environmental issues. EfD researchers Marcela Jaime Torres, César Salazar Espinoza, Francisco Alpízar, and Fredrik Carlsson have studied the effects of an environmental education campaign. They found a sizeable effect on children's knowledge, attitudes, and practices. However, they didn't find any evidence of a spillover effect on parents' behavior. Consequently, interventions targeting children should include the parents to achieve long-term impacts. The study was published in the Journal of Development Economics.

In this paper, published in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, EfD researcher Jorge Marco and his co-author Renan Goetz analyzed how much social networks, social pressure, and the scarcity of a common resource make people comply with norms in a way that favors cooperation. They found that social networks support cooperation, but their influence is limited. They also found that combinations of different types of informal enforcement policies should be applied cautiously because they may cancel each other out. Read more about this interesting study!

In this study, conducted by EfD researchers Yonas Alem, Sied Hassen, and Gunnar Köhlin, and published in the Journal of Economic Behaviour & Organization, the researchers created income-earning opportunities to empower households and conduct an actual stove purchase experiment to explore their willingness to pay for fuel-, time-, and indoor air pollution-reducing improved cookstoves. Results differed considerably between women and men, and when couples made a joint decision. Find out more about the interesting results!
