January 2024

Dear friends of EfD,

Welcome to the January 2024 edition of EfD’s Newsletter!

As you will see below, EfD is as active as ever. In a recent publication in Climate Policy, social acceptance to climate policies is analyzed among people in East Africa. Such research is important to actually see policies implemented. We also have one of the first publications in Communications Medicine, from our seven-country Covid-panel. There is also an abundance of policy outreach, this time on (i) peer-learning on forest management between countries, (ii) biomass dependency in Ethiopia, (iii) circular economy in Vietnam, (iv) fisheries management in Nigeria, (v) mangrove protection in Colombia, and (vi) air quality in Latin American cities. Those who make it to the end will also find two interesting new blog posts.

Enjoy!

Nepal has been a world leader in this area for decades. Visa problems prevented some participants from going to Nepal, so EfD arranged a corresponding tour for them to Ethiopia, also a country where great progress has been made in this field. Both groups came back with a lot of new invaluable insights. Read more about this project!

Uganda’s Post-COVID Recovery Strategy and NDC Implementation

This paper analyses the climate-friendliness of Uganda’s post-COVID-19 recovery strategy and, specifically, its alignment with the country’s targets in its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The recovery strategy has the potential to provide effective climate change response and meet the NDCs. However, there are several gaps related to the marginalisation of climate
action in the economic recovery resource-allocation process. The COVID-19 Macroeconomic Policy Response in Africa (CoMPRA) project was developed following a call for rapid response policy research into the COVID-19 pandemic by the IDRC.
