We end 2021 on an upbeat note with a flurry of activities. In this newsletter, you find the latest news and research from the EfD network.
Senior civil servants from five countries in East Africa met in Uganda for a peer-learning workshop in the Inclusive Green Economy program. You can see interviews on how they bridge the gap between policy and academia to develop more sustainable policies.
EfD Ghana is very active in stakeholder engagement on energy and fisheries. They also build the capacity of young researchers to communicate their research.
And there are applications on circular economy, problems of air pollution in Chile, and sustainable aquaculture practices, and renewable energy investments in Vietnam, among other news.

How can you create economic incentives for a sustainable society? What instruments work and how do you protect vulnerable groups? Researchers from the University of Gothenburg as well as officials, decision-makers, and researchers from five East African countries discussed this during a 3-day workshop in Uganda in November. Students at S:t George’s primary school near Nairobi have participated in an educational tree planting program. This training was arranged by EfD Kenya in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives and the school. The purpose was to create an interest in agriculture.

EfD Ghana organized workshops on proposal and academic writing, and science communication aimed at strengthening the communication capacity of researchers. The workshops drew tens of budding researchers from the University of Ghana and elsewhere, and a swirl of positive testimonies from participants. Read about this initiative!

Over 60 participants from academia, local government officials, the private sector, and civil society organizations met on December 2nd at Muni University to discuss the status of forests and biodiversity in the West Nile region of Uganda. Read more about this event!

What motivates small-scale shrimp farmers to accept sustainable aquaculture practices?

It requires investments and knowledge to implement good aquaculture practices. EfD researcher Nguyen Trong Hoai and his co-authors Truong Ngoc Phong and Vo Tat Thang, have investigated what it takes to make small-scale shrimp farmers in Vietnam want to invest in more environmental-friendly practices.

Small-scale fishing households: better income but less literacy than "non-fishers"
|
Small-scale fisheries play an essential role in food security in the Columbian Caribbean. Fishing communities have poor access to financial markets, jobs, and education. The fishing households have better income but less education than and non-fishing households.
Those are some of the interesting conclusions that researchers from Universidad de los Andes present in their EfD Discussion Paper Livelihoods Characterization of a Small-Scale Fishing Community in the Colombian Caribbean. Read this interesting paper (also available as a research brief!)

How do people in Chile perceive problems with air pollution and what solutions do they prefer?
|

What factors explain individuals' perceptions of fuelwood as a cause of air pollution in urban areas in central and southern Chile? And how willing are they to ban this fuel to counteract its negative effects?
These are some questions that EfD researchers César Salazar, Marcela Jaime, and Carlos Chávez have studied, with co-author Daniela Lillo. Their report Perceptions of problems and preferences for solutions: The case of poor air quality in central-southern Chile can provide advice for policymakers - read it!

What can other countries learn from Vietnam's solar and windpower success?
|
EfD researcher Do NamThang and a number of co-authors have studied the factors that have facilitated Vietnam's recent and rapid solar and wind power expansion.
They provide policy insights for other member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the publication Vietnam's solar and wind power success: Policy implications for the other ASEAN countries. And why not for others as well? Read this interesting report!
