Newsletter from EfD
Sept/Oct 2022
|
Dear friends of EfD,
We are back with a newsletter that is dominated by reports from our recent EfD Annual Meeting that was held in beautiful Uganda on September 22-26. After two years of virtual annual meetings due to Covid, the global EfD network once again met and the magic happened as dedicated researchers from all around the world met to discuss how research can contribute to poverty alleviation and environmental sustainability. In the newsletter, you will also find reports on the many outreach activities that EfD centers are involved in, not least related to renewable energy, as well as the latest on our research.
Please enjoy and share the latest news and research from the EfD network!

Now he is very happy that he did. The participation of the Swedish Embassy has, among many other benefits, opened doors to the Ugandan government.
“We will have much better chances to have an impact on policies now,” says Edward Bbaale.

How behavioral attributes help explain the gender wage gap
|
Dr. Tran My Minh Chau, a researcher in the EfD Early Career Fellowship Program, presented her findings at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh city. Photo by UEH University.
|
In many countries, gender inequality remains a social problem that manifests in several aspects of society, including in the labor market. One visible example of such inequality is the difference in wages paid to men and women for the same job. Besides the explained variation, how can you investigate the unobservable differences in attitudes towards risk and negotiation that result in the wage gap between the two genders? Marine protected areas (MPAs) provide both conservation and economic benefits. EfD researchers Heidi Jo Albers and co-author Madison F. Ashworth argue for more economic analysis of MPA policy questions, including those around siting, design, restrictions, and management choices; impact evaluation; responses of people; low-income country settings and incomplete enforcement; spatial settings without metapopulations; and conservation rather than harvest objectives. Is biofuel expansion in developing countries reasonable? A review of empirical evidence of food and land use impacts
|
The study by EfD researcher Haripriya Gundimeda and co-author Prantika Das identifies that the future expansion of biofuels in developing countries will depend upon five crucial aspects: the interplay between biofuel-induced food prices and food security, potential land availability, guaranteed feedstock supply sources, trade, and policy environment. The policy environment will play a more critical role in balancing the food-fuel trade-offs, as the right food, land-use, and biofuel policy are not exclusive but coexist. Learn more about this!
