Energy poverty harms development factors, such as income, education, life expectancy, employment, and mobile phone subscriptions. What difference does a transition to renewable energy make? And what if that energy is more costly? EfD researchers Philip Kofi Adom, Franklin Amuakwa-Mensah, and their co-authors Mawunyo Prosper Agradi and Aimable Nsabimana have looked into these interesting connections in their publication Energy poverty, development outcomes, and transition to green energy. Check it out!

"We need to revise the current flat bus fares"
|

Increases in bus fares have different effects on different income groups - those with low incomes have no choice but to take the bus even with rising rates, but people with higher incomes can choose the car instead. EfD researchers Santiago Gomez and Jorge Alexander Bonilla, with their co-authors Luis A. Guzman and Carlos Beltran have studied fare elasticities and present their findings in the publication BRT fare elasticities from smartcard data: Spatial and time-of-the-day differences. According to them, it's time to start discussing the flat fares and to consider differential fares to make public transportation affordable and reduce the burden on vulnerable groups. Does a devolution policy of forestland management help conserve forests? Does giving land use right as a property right or as per contract work better? A recent EfD publication titled “Does the devolution of forest management help conserve mangrove in the Mekong Delta of Viet Nam?”, by Truong Dang Thuy, Vo Quoc Tuan, and Pham Khanh Nam, examined 96 communes and 600 households in six Mekong Delta provinces in Vietnam to address these questions.
