Dear MedH and BioNut friends

MedH 2030

The merger project enters its final phase, and two departments will soon be one. A party in the early fall is in the planning to celebrate the birth of the new MedH. In five years’ time, this department will be the strongest at KI, having the best economy, the brightest researchers, the largest grants, the best work environments, and the most fantastic premises to which everyone at KI wants to move!

True or unrealistic? I don’t know, but one thing is certain: without dreams and visions, we will for sure not progress anywhere. After June 2024, when we are one department, I hope you will join me in creating a narrative for our future development, based on visions, goals, and dreams.

To our aid, a new strategy, MedH 2030, will be developed. Building on MedH 2025, it will take us into the future. MedH 2025 not only taught us about ourselves, it brought forward ideas and a stronger sense of belonging. Some tasks from MedH 2025 have already been implemented, such as the mentoring program for younger researchers. Others are still in progress, such as the common newsletter for seminars and other scientific activities, and some are yet to start.

With MedH 2030, we are ready for a new round of creative thinking and can fill these gaps. New focus areas can also be brought forward, such as the broadening of our research profile to encompass basic science and an extended education program. I am excited about this outlook and hope you share it with me.

Physical meetings in focus

What the merger process has taught me, at least, is how important physical meetings are to discuss science and education. Our first after work, the gathering of the new administration and the group leader and team leader retreat are good examples. I remind you that I am happy to discuss the new collaborative projects initiated at Yasuragi. If you were not satisfied with what you created there, other projects are also welcome. There is just one condition: they need to be collaborative, they should be grand and innovative, and you should be seriously committed to pursuing your ideas. I am all ears and positive to providing seed funding.

Improving our premises

At its meeting this week, the Neo steering group took the decision to appoint three working groups to improve the structure and routines in Neo. One group will focus on physical work environment issues. The present routines need to be improved and we must find a way to coordinate the department’s line management structure with the necessary local work.

A second group will bring order into the short-term issues with the freezer facility, creating SOP and reliable routines to check up on the freezers, which is necessary until we finally get a functioning freezer alarm and a new system with a central administration of the facility.

The third group will suggest a model for how Neo is best managed in the future, when MedH will fill up most of the building. Included in this mission is how the service team should be organized, which delegations it should have and how it should operate. The relationship between the steering group and other groups, including the work environment group, must also be clarified.

The ambition of creating these groups is to take the lead on changes that are needed at KI south. The heads of department at KI south and our dean have already agreed to work towards an integrated management of Ana Futura and Neo, including a service team that is common in its overall management, yet contains local units specific to each house. We are not there yet, but the creation of these groups shows the commitment of the Neo management to move forward and to do this quickly. I hope to be able to present the task description for these groups soon and which persons they contain.

The internal investigation of the freezer disaster has been presented and is now handed over to the external group. I am convinced that the investigations will result in changes in the way KI operates its key facilities, and that a centralized structure common to all KI will be created. This will require time, however, and in the meantime, we are acting to secure operations in our facility as mentioned.

After work #2

May 17 is Norway’s national day, and this is all fine. Congratulations all Norwegians. However, it is also the day of the second MedH/BioNut after work! You received an invitation from Karin two days ago. The last after work was great fun, and because the food and the premises were good, we will stick to the same place and meet at Kristallen, Södra Teatern. This time, we can hopefully use the terrasse and enjoy a mild and pleasant spring evening in preparation for a well-deserved weekend. Make sure you do not miss out on this event! See you all there!

Petter Höglund, Head of department

News from Central Administration

New location

Since 10 April, MedH's and Bionut's central administrations are located together on floor 8 in the Neo building. This gives us good conditions in our preparations for our future joint work when we become one and the same department. I encourage all of you to come by and say hello on occasion, whether you have a work matter or not. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Erik Pettersson who has been our move coordinator. Thank you, Erik!

Technical systems

From now on we are, in a technical sense, one and the same department. Bionut has been incorporated into MedH in both personnel and financial systems. In this context, I would like to emphasize that we are still formally two separate departments until July 1.

Risk assessment

On 14 May we will have a follow-up meeting on the risk and impact assessment (risk- och konsekvensbedömning). The risk assessment is based on the work environment and is drawn up by the employer and the safety organization. In case of major reorganizations, there is a legal requirement to carry out a risk and impact assessment.

Klas Karlsson, Head of administration

Meet a MedH staff member – Rafael Ceña Diez

What is your role at MedH?
I work as a Research Specialist at the Division of infectious diseases at MedH and I am team leader in the group of Anders Sönnerborg. We are currently working in the discovery of and studies on the mechanisms of new antiviral agents, including HIV multidrug resistance, as well as microbicides against sexually transmitted infections.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job as a researcher is that every day presents new challenges to solve, which keeps me intellectually stimulated and engaged. I truly value the multidisciplinary nature of virology, as it allows me to integrate knowledge and techniques from various scientific fields and the collaborative aspect of my job, working with a diverse team of scientists, clinicians, and public health experts.

What are your interests/hobbies?
In my free time, I enjoy engaging in outdoor activities such as climbing. It's a great way for me to stay active, relieve stress and connect with nature.

What are you looking forward to right now?
I'm really looking forward to the upcoming changes and opportunities in my career. Starting from April, I will be stepping into a new role as a team leader. In addition, I'm excited about our new European project focused on microbicides and biomaterials. Collaborating with experts across Europe on this innovative project presents a great opportunity to make significant advancements in our field and potentially contribute to the development of new solutions for combating infectious diseases.

Education

Digital degree certificates

KI introduces digital degree certificates from April 1, 2024. This means that all degree certificates issued after this date will no longer be printed on paper and sent by post. Digital processing has advantages in terms of faster processing, minimizing the risk of falsification and the risk of lost or missing diplomas. As a doctoral student, you apply for a degree via Ladok for students as before. Information on degrees and digital degree certificates

What should a doctoral thesis contain?

KI's rules for licentiate and doctoral theses have been revised.

New is that the doctoral student can include other types of scientific publications in the thesis in addition to original papers. The aim is to adapt to the current development towards open science, and to ensure that the thesis better reflects the doctoral student's learning and development.

A requirement has also been introduced that the doctoral student must be the first author of at least one original paper.

As before, the number of papers in a thesis may vary, but in total they must have a scope that corresponds to four years of full-time doctoral studies.

On the staff portal you find important information about the thesis, both regarding the constituent papers and the kappa.
