A word from the Head of department

Dear MedH friends!

The light returns quickly when life springs out from everywhere. This time of the year normally comes with feelings of hope and anticipation. Those feelings presently meet with some resistance on their way, but overall I am hopeful. More and more people are vaccinated and if we can manage a few more months, we will see an improved situation. Let’s straighten our backs and make new and improved efforts to adhere to guidelines. You find all of those as well as other Covid-19 information at the KI web. When we can meet physically again, I promise you all a grand feast of celebration! Take every chance you can when we meet to remind me of this!

The work with our strategy MedH 2025 progresses. The MedH leadership has distilled your unit strategies into six focus areas. I will present those and discuss the next step a Zoom meeting for the whole department on April 15, 13.00-13.30. Follow this link to join the meeting
A separate calendar invitation will be sent out. One focus group per area will be formed and I hope that many of you want to contribute also in this phase. Visit our strategy web page MedH 2025 | MedH Staff Portal (ki.se) to look for updates and refresh your memories of all unit’s strategies.

Staff turnaround is an essential part of a working place. The mixture of sadness to lose appreciated coworkers is mixed by anticipation to get to know new and inspiring colleagues. We all recognize this from our own daily life, in research groups, teaching teams, clinical settings and administrative units. At the central administration, Emma Karlsson and Therese Lind are both leaving us for new positions at KI. Gulaid Ismail also recently left for a job at Kronofogden. We will miss you all greatly, but are also happy to “export” three such great talents to other parts of our own organization and to other governmental authorities! Amalia Kewenter is joing us as Communications Officer after Emma. Take a chance also to go back to the previous newsletter and read interviews with Johanna Sandelius, our new Head of finance, and our new financial officer Sara Ceven. At CIM, Margit Ekström´s successor Eve-Marie Rowe Kärkäs has already started and is now learning the job as unit administrator until Margit retires in June. We will hear more about Eve-Marie in the next newsletter. Welcome to MedH all of you!

Finally, I wish you good luck in this spring’s application round from major granting agencies. As always, I stand by to deliver signatures, recommendation letters and departmental certifications when you need them. I promise an extra alcohol-free drink at our next MedH party to those of you who send then to me earlier than 24 hours before the deadline!

Best regards,

/Petter

Petter Höglund, Head of department

Changes in the central administration

Finance

It is with very mixed feelings that I announce the departure of Head of finance Therese Lind, who is terminating her employment here at MedH. During her time at the department, Therese has built a world-class finance department and, with her seemingly endless positivity, become an extremely popular colleague.

Therese has been offered the role of Head of administration at the Department of Global Public Health (GPH) beginning on April 12th; however, she has very kindly agreed to spend a few more days here at MedH to introduce her successor Johanna Sandelius. We are happy to welcome Johanna as Head of finance from May 3rd.

Communication

With a heavy heart I also have to announce that our Communications Officer Emma Karlsson has decided to leave MedH. She will continue her career by joining KI’s Communications and Public Relations Office. Her last day at MedH is April 9th.

Over the years that Emma has spent with us, she has established a number of highly effective communication channels, including the department’s website and newsletter. With her can-do attitude and great helpfulness, Emma is a highly appreciated member of staff.

Amalia Kewenter will replace Emma as MedH´s Communications Officer from April 9th. Warmly welcome to our department, Amalia!

We congratulate Therese and Emma on their new positions and wish them both the very best of luck!

/Klas

Amalia Kewenter is our new Communications Officer

What are you most looking forward to in your new role?
"I’m looking forward to get to know MedH and all my new colleagues. Working with MedH’s web pages will be fun, and I’m also looking forward to support research groups and administration with various communication related issues. Since I have worked at KI before, I know I’ll be part of a very interesting and exciting organisation. I’m so excited to be back at KI as a Communications Officer!"

What are your main tasks?
"I am the main editor for MedH’s external and internal web pages. I am also editor of the department’s newsletter where I create content together with the Head of Department. I am always on the lookout for exciting content, so I take this opportunity to mention that I gladly except all suggestions of news stories regarding MedH!

As Communications Officer I support the department with communication-oriented issues. At the moment I’m involved in a project about effective management communication. I am also contact person and responsible administrator for the systems IDAC and UBW".

Where have you worked before?
"The past year I took a break from work, in order to study Art History and Psychology and to stay at home with my new puppy. Before that I was working as Executive Assistant and Web Editor at MMK at KI".

What do you like to do in your free time?
"When I’m off I spend time with my dog Will and my friends (if possible during times like these). I enjoy doing yoga and cooking and I’m also a huge consumer of culture; reading books, tv-series, going to museums etc. When there wasn't a pandemic, I used to travel a lot".
