Dear MedH friends

I hope you are all well in your professional and personal lives and that you work hard, which is necessary in our profession. But don’t forget to take time off also! It’s easy to become submerged in science; this 24/7 activity that we bring with us constantly. I’m much in favor of the idea of a balanced life. Even if we love what we do, it’s important to make an active choice and use your brains for other activities now and then. KI has a lot to say about how to find balance in your life where you can find inspiration.

I was recently reminded about the focus we sometimes have at KI, on how difficult it can be to manage work optimally. We are often told which risks we face balancing demands from our capacity to perform. However, it’s important to also remind ourselves about the benefits, freedom, and inspiration it is to work as a creative scientist! Not many other jobs are as interesting and offer so many opportunities for personal and professional development. I like to think that this feeling is also transmitted to all of you who are not scientists or teachers, but work hard to support our academic work, centrally and in the units. Freedom also comes with expectations and responsibility at all levels. It’s of outmost importance that all of you who have line management duties exert your leadership with compassion, understanding and wisdom. KI has many opportunities for leadership development, and I would like to encourage all of you who want to train and improve your leadership skills to contact our HR for a discussion. This is not only for established leaders, but for all of us. We should all act as leaders and exert respectful and encouraging behavior in interactions with colleagues.
Mentoring program at MedH
One initiative that I hope will be useful for leadership training is the mentoring program for new early-career scientists that we are presently working on within MedH 2025. We will present a program soon and start the first program this coming fall. Everyone in the right career level makes up our target group, and I hope that those of you who are clinical scientists in the hospital will be well represented in the group. Understanding the university world and what is required to navigate in academia is sometimes difficult among clinicians. The opposite is also true: preclinical scientists are frequently less acquainted with how patient work is conducted and the challenges that are faced when conducting clinical studies. Hopefully, we will be able to increase mutual understanding in the program we will present.
New newsletter for seminars
Another MedH 2025 strategy implementation in the final phase, deals with platforms for scientific exchange. We are close to finalizing the work with a common newsletter listing all our seminar series, for easy access and possibilities to add events to your calendars. Our hope is to reduce the use of e-mails for seminars and other events and instead rely on a monthly newsletter. All administrators and responsible persons for all seminar series are invited to a meeting to discuss how we can harmonize the flow of information to build our newsletter in the best of ways. We hope to have all this up and running after the summer for more coherent and regular information to all.
Some good news on work environment and sustainability
A third strategy implementation well underway regards our work environment and sustainability. You have all heard that paper cups for coffee are no longer purchased in our academic environments Neo and Ana Futura. The initiative came from Sara von Bahr Grebäck, who is leading the work in this implementation program. Sara has also initiated several other activities toward better sustainability, such as agreements with biotech companies selling us products to reuse their styrofoam boxes. Most recently, MedH decided to provide free period products in our premises, a decision that was quickly adopted by both the Neo and Ana Futura steering groups. This made us all very pleased. MedH is leading the way, and we strive to let this be a sign of all our work.

Klas Karlsson

Starting this week, our head of administration Klas Karlsson is back from a seven-month duty as Planning Director at the KI Central Administration. I know that Klas has done a tremendous job centrally and he will for sure be missed there. At MedH, we are very glad to have you back, and look forward to your outlook in sharpening our administration, making use of all new insights and increased knowledge about KI that you have acquired. I would like to take this opportunity also to thank Johanna Sandelius for your work as Acting head of administration in Klas’ absence! We had a great time together and achieved many things.

Just to mention a few; we brought to execution strategic investments in our units, finalized recruitment of new economy staff in a turbulent situation and started the work (which will continue now with increasing speed) to provide a more transparent overarching budget follow-up tool for MedH. I am sure these things will strengthen our competitiveness significantly. Many thanks Johanna!

Finally, a heartful congratulation to Jenny Mjösberg at CIM, who received this year’s prestigious Göran Gustafsson award! A great achievement Jenny! We are proud of you and happy to have you onboard the MedH ship! Good luck with your work and see you around!

/Petter Höglund, Head of Department

News from Central Administration

Klas Karlsson is now back as Head of administration and I will return to my position as Head of finance after my time as Acting head. I must say that it's really fruitful to put oneself in another's place, to be able to better relate to their exeperiences. This has been a intense but very interesting period. And it has also been a great pleasure to work with the different aspects of the department together with all of you!
