Dear MedH friends

Midsummer is celebrated in all Nordic countries, often with a reference to the birth of John the Baptist, but midsummer celebrations have most certainly taken place long before Christianity, as a tribute to the return of light after a long dark winter. The turn of the seasons is particularly evident in parts of the world far from the equator, such as in Sweden, and the sudden arrival of spring each year is worthy of celebration.

The MedH career program
The MedH career program for younger researchers has been finalized and advertized. We received 38 applications, some from other departments, and even other universities. We don't accept external applicants in this round, but the fact that external applicants address us, is a testimony of the program’s attractiveness. I'm confident that this group of research leaders will learn many things and start building networks. Each participant in the program will also be offered a personal mentor. The application deadline has passed, but in case you missed it and want to apply, contact the organizing group and we will see what we can do. You can read about the program later in this letter.

We say goodbye to Amalia
Communications officer Amalia Kewenter is leaving MedH to take up a new job at KTH. We will miss you Amalia but congratulate you on your new challenge. Amalia has done great developing MedH communication. Her legacy will remain in ongoing projects, including the creation of a MedH seminar newsletter that will continue when a new communications officer is in place. We look forward to the completion of this important MedH 2025 project in the fall.
Success at MedH
A few days ago, we received news that Marcus Buggert is this year’s recipient of the Anders Jahre prize for young researchers! Congratulations Marcus! Looking at the list of recipients of this award, I conclude that of the five last Anders Jahre prizes to young researchers, three have been awarded to MedH and CIM! This is nothing less than a sensational track record and of course a testimony to a fantastic research environment! I also received news from KI today that Niklas Björkström has been formally appointed Professor of clinical microbiology at KI from 1 July. Congratulations Niklas! We look forward to your contribution to the department as a clinician scientist and teacher, we are convinced that your future career will continue to be very successful.

New guest professor
A warm welcome to Marc Raaijmakers from the Erasmus Cancer Institute, Rotterdam, new guest professor at HERM from 1 July. We look forward to your regular input to HERM and its stem cell biology work!

On a final note, I wish to personally thank all of you for contributing to the great gift and celebration on my 60:th birthday earlier this spring! It was particularly fun to be able to celebrate together with Klas Karlsson, with whom I constantly discuss challenges and opportunities at MedH. Many thanks! Have a great summer all of you!

/Petter Höglund, Head of Department

News from Central Administration

MedH:s new career program for younger researchers
The department is excited to have launched a new career program targeted towards researchers who have completed a Ph.D. but not yet attained a permanent position at KI. The program aspires to help create better scientists. We hope to achieve this by providing individually matched experienced mentors, inspirational scientific lectures intermixed with career track advice, and sessions on the practicalities of setting up and running your independent research group. Finally, we hope that the program will provide participants with a great network for future collaborations. We are delighted with the response and are preparing to launch with our inaugural cohort this September with the program set to run until summer 2024. Clinical researchers can apply until 22 June! See application form online.

Changes in the Central administration team

As Petter said, our Communications officer Amalia Kewenter will leave MedH in June. She will leave a big void behind professionally and she has also been a popular co worker. During her time with us, Amalia has developed the department's internal and external communication. Among other things, she has had a central role in the development of the department's strategy "MedH2025". We wish you good luck at your new job and thank you for your time at MedH Amalia!

/Klas Karlsson, Head of Administration

Important to know before summer

Vacation and leave
Summer vacations are around the corner and we would like to remind you that a minimum of 20 days’ vacation per year is mandatory for all employees. To make sure salaries will be paid correctly during the summer it's important that all planned vacation and/or other types of leave (like parental leave) is registered and approved by your manager before the leave. Preferably at the latest by the end of June for all planned leave until September.
Illness and care of children (VAB) during vacation
If you become ill during your vacation, a sickness notification must be made in the PA web and to your immediate manager on the first day of illness. If the notification is not made on the first day, you will have to submit a medical certificate that is valid from the first day of when you fell ill. If your child falls ill during your vacation, you must notify your manager and then register 'VAB' in the PA web, on the same day the child falls ill. This is to ensure correct salary payment

New system for reporting incidents
It's important that you report all work-related illness and occurrences at KI in the IA system. Here you find a Guide to the system in Sharepoint.

Meet a MedH staff member - Jesper Bäckdahl

Jesper Bäckdahl

What is your role at MedH?
I'm a post-doc in Mikael Rydéns and Niklas Mejherts's group. I split my time between research and clinical work in the Endocrinology unit. At the moment I'm also working with the new MedH career program.

What is your research about?
Using prospective clinical interventional cohorts and spatial approaches, I map various cell types in human adipose tissue. I hope to establish cellular determinants of adipose tissue health that in turn can be used to inform personalized treatment decisions.

What is the best part of your job?
Research requires and invites creativity. Clinical medicine is, for good reason, founded on best practice and established guidelines. It’s refreshing being encouraged to think outside the box.

What are your interests/hobbies?
Sports and travel.
What are your plans for summer?
I will spend time in my summer house and visit friends in London and Paris. My kids are super excited to see famous landmarks so we will be doing the most touristy things imaginable.
