Dear MedH friends

We entered October with a challenging task, given to us by our president, to accommodate the research groups and activities at the BioNut department into our MedH structure. You have heard about this by the president and by our dean before, and you can findall the background on the staff portal.

Project organisation is formed

A project group and task forces are now being formed, and the work has started towards a new and extended MedH by the end of June next year. We are lucky to have a very competent project leader in Agneta Wallin Levinovitz who will lead the work. Look out for invitations to information meetings and other activities along the way. A web site for the project will soon be up where we will focus not only on information regarding the work but also on opportunities for new collaborative grants and tips and tricks for how to contribute to the merger in the coming year.

Business as usual

The joining of the two departments will not occur by itself but will occupy the administration at MedH and at BioNut for the year to come and onwards from that. It is my intention to leave all of you to conduct business as usual, meaning to produce excellent science, engage in new collaborations, write groundbreaking papers, apply for new grants and conduct dedicated and inspiring teaching. Janne Johansson at BioNut and I will work together to make this happen.

An important future task is to focus on the opportunities that the new department offers in terms of scientific expertise and methodological knowledge. Some people argue that such possibilities already exist in the Neo building, where BioNut and MedH work side-by-side. But Neo only accommodates part of MedH, and sharing administrative bonds, having a joint leadership structure, and engaging in common social and scientific meetings within a common departmental structure will provide common ground of a different kind. I am very positive about this perspective.

Focus on synergies

Janne and I will personally lead one of the task forces in the project, which is to look ahead with research synergies in focus. In education, BioNut has activities that complement MedH, both in terms of programs and courses and in terms of teaching expertise and knowledge. Our PhD students have a very good learning environment at both BioNut and at MedH already, and we will work to maintain what is good and develop parts that the joining requires. The same goes for our administrative resources.

I hope that you will engage in the work by coming to information meetings, taking part in working groups and seeking contacts with BioNut researchers and teachers to look for new friends and new collaborations.

Mentoring program for young researchers started

Our mentoring program for younger researchers within MedH 2025 has started and the participants can look forward to an exciting year with theme afternoons, retreats and many inspiring talks and discussions. If you have not yet signed up as a mentor for one of these aspiring future group leaders, do so now! There are still openings for those of you who want to develop yourselves and at the same time provide mentoring to a younger colleague. You will make a difference!

New head of unit

From September 16, Frieder Braunschweig is joining MedH to take up the position as head of our Heart and Lung Diseases Unit. Frieder is an adjunct clinical professor at KI and has recently stepped down after 7 years head of the cardiology clinic to focus more on his research. His leadership skills and scientific excellence gives great promises for the future of cardiology and lung medicine at MedH, and I know he has many ideas for development. Very welcome Frieder!

New professor

Finally, I am happy to announce that our unit head Annika Berquist has been formally appointed professor of gastroenterology at KI from October 1st. Congratulations Annika! MedH look forward to your continuous contribution to the department as a clinician scientist and teacher and we are convinced that your future career will continue to be very successful.

Have a great fall all of you!

Petter Höglund, Head of department

News from Central Administration

Status report regarding the integration of BioNut into MedH

The project organisation is being set up. Until now, the chairman of the steering group has been appointed, dean Maria Eriksdotter and project manager Agneta Wallin Levinovitz. Other members of the steering group are appointed and decided by the president.

As soon as the steering group is staffed, hopefully within a couple of weeks, the other parts of the project organization can then be decided such as project group, working groups, etc.

More updates on the process will be given regularly.

Klas Karlsson, Head of administration

New head of the Heart and Lung Diseases Unit

On September 16, Frieder Braunschweig took office as Head of the Heart and Lung Diseases Unit. Frieder has previously worked as head of the cardiology clinic and he is an adjunct clinical professor at KI.

During 2023-2024 a relocation project is going on in Neo. The purpose of this project is to improve the research environment, achieve a more efficient use of the premises, and to reduce the costs. There is now a page on the Staff portal where you can find information and news about the project.

Don't forget to use your wellness allowance. Employees at KI are entitled to a wellness allowance of SEK 1500 per calendar year. This allowance can be used during the calendar year. The last time you can make use of the wellness allowance in the current year is until December's payroll run. In order for the auditors to handle the expenditure case, the case must be registered in the PA-web by 30 November.

Environment and sustainability news

KI Fun Run was a success! Over 500 participants joined in and this is really an event where all of KI comes together! All departments were represented by students, researchers and staff. Together we completed 900 laps around the 1,6 km course.

One of many teams in the race was Red Like Blood (from HERM). Unfortunately the costume and team identity of a red ribbon was not enough to win. But the team effort was great nevertheless!

The award for the winning team was a live plant to take care of, and return next year for it to be awarded to next year’s winners! Sustainability in action.

Also to note: no single use items anywhere. Both the Health ambassador and the Environment and Sustainability representative in me were very happy!

Have a look at the new updated websites for environment and sustainability at KI! The staff version has all the links and documents you need for guidelines in your daily work. The external site has info for the general public, prospective future students or employees, suppliers, collaborators and media.

Food waste at KI (lab and office kitchens) will be sorted and collected as a valuable source for biofuel or agriculture fertilization. Starting in Solna during the fall and soon to come also in Flemingsberg. If we all change our behaviour just a little, it can make a big difference. Please sort your waste and walk the extra distance to the nearest kitchen/lunch room with all food waste. Don’t throw the banana peel in the nearest bin!

Meet a MedH staff member – Erik Pettersson

What is your role at MedH?
I work as an education administrator for Term 5 and Term 6 at the medical programme. I also administrate other courses and the Education Committee at MedH.

What is the best part of your job?
One thing that I really appreciate about working at KI is that there is room for initiatives. It makes for an exciting and rewarding work environment. I think that the development of the new medical programme in particular has benefited from a work environment that is both systematic and dynamic. Of course, it is all made possible by a lot of talented people and I am fortunate to have many wonderful colleagues at MedH!

What are your interests/hobbies?
I have been spending more time horse riding as of late. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a challenge!

What is something you are you looking forward to right now?
I look forward to continuing the important work that the Education Committee is doing regarding Equal Opportunities at KI.

Research

Five researchers at Karolinska Institutet are awarded 30 million Swedish kronor from the Swedish Research Council (VR) to establish a so-called centre of excellence for further development of cell-based cancer treatments. Professor Yenan Bryceson at MedH will lead the new centre, which will be named the Centre for Cellular Cancer Therapy (C3T).

“It feels amazing to have the opportunity to build a translational endeavour on the basis of strong ties between basic and clinical researchers,” says Yenan Bryceson. “Our hope is to use our understanding of killer cells to develop better therapies against solid tumours.”

Hannes Hagström was interviewed by Dagens Nyheter about a study on liver deceases which was published in the European Journal of Epidemiology.

The study shows that the incidence rates of a number of chronic liver deceases have increased in Sweden during the last 15 years. Worryingly, mortality in several liver diseases also increased during this period.

Niklas Björkström has been appointed Professor of Clinical Microbiology, focusing on immunovirology at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge, from 1 July 2023. Niklas Björkström is a group leader for the Niklas Björkström group at the Center for Infectious Medicine.
