Dear MedH and BioNut friends

I am happy that this MedH Newsletter will reach, not only the MedH staff, but also our future colleagues at BioNut. The content of the newsletter is mainly focused on issues related to MedH, but I warmly welcome all readers from BioNut.

For six additional months, BioNut and MedH are two departments but from July 1 only one. From then, MedH welcomes BioNut as a unit and looks forward to all new possibilities this integration brings. Our efforts now are aimed towards a smooth and complication-free integration.

Stay informed about the integration

From an administrative perspective, working groups handle different topics such as economy, systems issues, education, doctoral education, HR, and scientific development. You can read all about the integration project at the project’s web page. You are also invited to join the information meetings that our current dean (who will continue to oversee the merger) lead every third Tuesday lunch, together with our project manager Agneta Wallin Levinovitz.

Building the foundation for MedH research in the years to come

Janne Johansson and I lead the “future group” within the project. Our first task is to plan the group leader/team leader retreat at Hasseludden Yasuragi on February 1-2. If you are a group leader or team leader and have not yet signed up, please do so. I expect all who are not already committed to travel or assignments outside of Stockholm to attend. In case you have declined because of other activities at home, please consider changing your priorities.

The retreat is an important stepping-stone for research at MedH in the years to come. The aim is to build the foundation for new strong research constellations and projects at MedH. By focusing on the possibilities, opportunities, and strengths of the merger, we create momentum for the future.

Important possibility to strengthen the education

Medical education at Karolinska Institutet is in danger. Our clinical education at MedH is challenged by a shortage of clinical teachers and lack of time for those we have, due to heavy and increasing clinical workload. Clinical education also offers limited possibilities for non-clinicians to teach and train students. This poses a challenge for us to live up to the MedH 2025 strategy, in which we emphasize scientists in education and students in research.

BioNut brings educational activities, programs and courses in biomedicine and nutrition to MedH that gives new opportunities. Our educational platform will expand and diversify. The MedH education committee will have many new opportunities to develop our education, not the least integrating the nutrition theme with our clinical focus.

Successful AW and day for administrative staff

The afterwork at Södra Teatern on December 1 was a success and I hope we can have at least one more during the spring. Social interactions are less frequent than scientific or educational gatherings at KI, which I think is a mistake. We need to meet also under a non-scientific umbrella, to get to know new colleagues. Good relations foster good science, great education, and respectful collegiality.

The administrative staff met for one day at the end of November. They now know each other much better, providing a good spirit for working together. Activities involving other staff will come in the spring. Everyone should feel included in this project.

New deans have been appointed

Our president has appointed new deans to lead the department groups from January 1 next year. Our new dean is Matti Sällberg, professor at the department of Laboratory Medicine. Matti is well known to all of us for his dedicated public appearances during the Covid-19 pandemic. He is a strong advocate for KI south, which he showed many times as head of department, and I am sure he will represent us very well. Welcome to your new job, Matti! I look forward to working together with you in the coming years!

Many of our researchers awarded

Finally, I wish to congratulate all who received grants this year from VR, Cancerfonden, Hjärt- Lungfonden, Radiumhemmets Forskningsfonder, Wallenberg Foundation, Region Stockholm, Karolinska Institutet and many other foundations and granting agencies! Many researchers from MedH and from BioNut were awarded grants. For those who did not get a grant this year, do not despair! Seek advice from successful colleagues and mentors and work on how to improve your application next year. We stand together and support each other both in good and in bad times.

Activities are now winding down before the upcoming holidays and we all look forward to a few weeks of well-deserved rest. I wish those of you who celebrate it a merry Christmas and all of you, a happy new year!

Petter Höglund, Head of department

News from Central Administration

The new year is just around the corner, and together with the administration I would like to thank you all for good cooperation during 2023. We are looking forward to continuing the good work in the new year.

Relocation of the administration

It has now been decided that the administration of MedH and BioNut will share an office space, and that it will be located on floor 8 in the NEO building. The moving date has not yet been decided but it will probably be at the end of the first quarter of 2024.

INDI for 2024

As part of the integration, it has been decided that MedH and BioNut will have the same INDI (indirect costs) percentage for 2024. The percentage will be 21.53%.

Wishing you Happy Holidays and a joyful New Year!

Klas Karlsson, Head of administration

Meet a MedH staff member – Ann-Sofie Backman

What is your role at MedH?
I work as a gastroenterology consultant and previously served as the Director of Studies in Internal Medicine at MedS. In the past year, I transitioned from Karolinska University Hospital and MedS to take on a new role as a research leader at the gastroenterology department at Ersta Hospital. Additionally, I am a new research group leader at Med H.

I am also involved in medical education as a course leader for an elective course and I teach using the pedagogical method of Team-Based Learning in the medical program. Since November, I have been a member of the UN (Utbildningsnämnd) at MedH.

What is the best part of your job?
It is both challenging and rewarding to involve and monitor patients in clinical trials. I have noticed that patients often have a positive inclination towards participating in research, and I think that their involvement enhances their engagement and understanding of their own healthcare.

Additionally, I enjoy witnessing the growth and progress of students, from their early stages as novices to becoming independent professionals.

What are your interests/hobbies?
I enjoy participating in various sports, but currently I am part of a disco dance group called Formation Adults (30+). We compete at national and European levels, and it is a lot of fun.

What are your plans for Christmas?
I look forward to spending time with my children, who have been studying away from home, as well as enjoying quality time with my parents.

New webpages for research groups

All research groups and teams are getting new webpages at ki.se, retrieving a lot of information from KI RIMS. The process of gradually transferring information from the current pages to new pages has now started. This is carried out by the comunications officer at the departmen, together with the KI RIMS project. Group and team leaders can manage the information in KI RIMS. They will receive a notification when their new page is published, but it might be a good idea to already now log in to KI RIMS to have a look at the information.

Education

Reflecting on what you have learned – a new routine at the end of your doctoral studies

Doctoral students who submit their application for public defence/licentiate seminar as of 15 March 2024 must also submit a report regarding their learning during their doctoral education and on how the learning outcomes were achieved.

The new routine affects the application for public defence/licentiate seminar. The application form will be less extensive than before, but instead you will need to submit a new form containing your learning report together with a summary report from your supervisor. Pay attention to the date so that you use the right form when applying for public defence.

Higher Education courses for teachers

For you as a teacher, clinical supervisor or involved in education at KI there are courses at different levels and areas, so that you can develop your pedagogical skills. The courses for spring are now published.
