ChAMP Annual Retreat

Rånäs Slott 20-21 November

The ChAMP team at Rånäs Slott

The ChAMP (CfA highlights Asthma Markers of Phenotype) project had its annual retreat at Rånäs Slott on 20-21 November 2018 with about 60 participants, including international collaborators from the UK, Poland, France, Denmark and Switzerland.

Because the project during the past five years has developed and applied new panels for biomarker measurements, the focus of many of the presentations and discussions during the retreat was on how to integrate complex heterogeneous data to produce biomarker profiles linked to specific asthma phenotypes. Results were shown from the U-BIOPRED, BIOAIR, Swedish GA2LEN and Wessex studies, and the newly started study BIOCROSS was also presented.

Irrespective of the input used for clustering of data (e.g profiles of markers in blood, sputum, or urine) certain clinically distinct molecular subgroups (e.g. typical type 2 inflammation, obesity related asthma, high IL6-trans signaling, inflammasome-associated, etc) were replicated using different strategies. Moreover, the development of new and more predictive experimental models for studies of mechanisms in asthma were also reported and discussed. The ultimate goal of the project is to achieve better biomarkers to support the implementation of personalised treatments for asthma.

The ChAMP project is co-ordinated by the CfA and receives funding from the Swedish Strategic Foundation, Astra Zeneca, the Stockholm County Council Research Funds, the Swedish Heart Lung Foundation, and the Swedish Medical Research Council.

Food Allergy Theme in the KI magazine

Medical Science (Medicinsk Vetenskap)

The popular science magazine Medical Science (Medicinsk Vetenskap), published by Karolinska Institutet, has included a series of articles on food allergy research in its latest issue. The articles can also be read on the KI website, in both Swedish and English. Several CfA-affiliated researchers are interviewed, among which Caroline Nilsson, Erik Melén, Jennifer Protudjer, Marianne van Hage and Björn Nordlund, about the latest research findings as well as on ongoing studies. A guide to the different food allergies and intolerances is also included.

Report from Food Allergy Conference 11th October

The Project Manager for Good food for all, Sofia Knáz, presented the project at the conference.

On 11th October the Swedish Nutrition Foundation organised a Food Allergy Conference in Stockholm, in collaboration with the Good food for all (Bra mat för alla) project. 120 participants listened to presentations on food allergy covering a variety of topics, ranging from prevalence, diagnosis, treatment, quality of life, nutrition to labelling of food products.

Report from the conference on the Swedish Food Federation website

About the Good food for all project

The Good food for all (Bra mat för alla) project is a collaboration between the Centre for Allergy Research, the Asthma and Allergy Association and the Swedish Food Federation. Together, we will build up a national centre of excellence with the ultimate goal to improve the quality of life of persons with food hypersensitivity.

The centre will be established with funding from the Swedish Arvsfonden. Read more about Good food for all on on CfA's website and at the Asthma and Allergy Association's site.

Opinion article in medical newspaper Dagens Medicin:

Acute shortage of allergologists and pulmonologists

Recently, an opinion article was published in the Swedish medical newspaper Dagens Medicin by Cecilia Bredin, Anders Lindén, Apostolos Bossios, Barbro Dahlén, Giovanni Ferrara, Johan Grunewald, Magnus Sköld och Victoria Strand.

The article describes the urgent shortage of allergologists and pulmonologists in Sweden, which is a serious problem that will have a substantial impact on the health of patients with severe allergies and pulmonary disease, both at a regional and a national level.
