About the speaker:

Parameswaran Nair

Dr. Nair's research focuses on developing and applying non-invasive measurements of airway inflammation to guide the treatment of severe asthma and COPD. His laboratory characterizes the types of bronchitis in airway diseases using measurements in sputum, and develops novel biomarkers in sputum. Dr Nair has pioneered the introduction of anti-IL5 treatments for severe asthma, first by showing efficacy of mepolizumab in a small cohort of patients selected because of high sputum eosinophils, and then having a leading role in several large multicenter trials with different drugs targeting IL-5. More recently, he has led trials with other new biologics that are in the pipeline for treatment of asthma or COPD.

Sven-Erik Dahlén, for participation in the co-ordination team of the IMI project 3TR that was recently approved for funding by the European Commission. The 3TR (Taxonomy, Treatment, Targets and Remission) project is a precision medicine endeavor. It will focus on the identification of the molecular mechanisms of non-response to treatments, relapses and remission in autoimmune, inflammatory, and allergic conditions.

3TR is a highly integrated and transdisciplinary consortium that proposes multi-dimensional molecular analysis of different biomarkers collected longitudinally from patient cohorts suffering from seven different inflammatory diseases (RA, SLE, MS, IBD, Mb Crohn, COPD and asthma).

The project will be coordinated by Professor Marta Alarcón-Riquelme, Fundación Pública Andaluza Progreso y Salud, Spain. She is also foreign adjunct professor at the Institute of Environmental Medicine at KI. 3TR has 70 partners (including universities, pharmaceutical companies, universities, SME’s, societies and patient organisations). The total budget will be 80 million EUR, of which 40 million EUR is contributed by the pharmaceutical industry.

The project is estimated to start August 2019 and will run for 7 years. The contributions to the project in Stockholm by Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital and the Science for Life Laboratory will be coordinated by Sven-Erik Dahlén.

The "Good food for all" project is looking for persons with food allergies and food hypersensitivity to contribute to the national centre that is being built up

Do you have physician-diagnosed food allergy or food hypersensitivity and would like to get involved in supporting the national centre of excellence "Good food for all" (Bra mat för alla)?

"Good food for all" is now looking for persons to include in a reference group of patients with food allergy and food hypersensitivity. Participation in this group will mean you will be asked for your input and advice during the course of the project, and to participate in meetings, workshops and surveys.

The main goal of "Good food for all" is to create a transdisciplinary, multisectorial, national centre of excellence for food allergy and other hypersensitivity to food in Sweden.

Register your interest at the latest 25th February

Save the date: KiiM Retreat 3-4 October 2019

This year's KiiM retreat which will be held at Skogshem and Wijk on Lidingö 3-4 October. All the people involved in KiiM and Aii are currently working on the programme.

Are you a PhD student and want to help out?

Since this is an important and appreciated event for immunology doctoral students and usually there are around 70 students attending, doctoral students are encouraged to participate in the planning and organization! We are now looking for 2-3 doctoral students to join the KiiM 2019 organising committee!

This will be a great opportunity to network, gain experience of event planning, and make the 2019 KiiM retreat the best doctoral student retreat (+ it looks good on your CV).

Please contact one of the following persons if you are interested: caroline.gronwall@ki.se, stephen.malin@ki.se or mikael.karlsson@ki.se
