Asthma still kills -

New report from Asthma UK and Academia Europaea

A new report, Asthma still kills, from Asthma UK and Academia Europaea – an official advisor to the European Commission – has recently been published. The report seeks to identify urgent priorities for the international research community to treat, prevent and cure asthma.

Asthma still kills summarises a meeting of global asthma experts held in late 2018 and aims to provide direction for where research into asthma mechanisms needs to go next, highlighting the unmet need for further research into non-T2 (non-eosinophilic) asthma.

Studies have shown that up to 50% of people with asthma respond poorly to conventional anti-inflammatory or anti-eosinophil treatments, yet research into non-T2 asthma remains limited. The report identifies four key areas for urgent research: the role of sex hormones, the microbiome, the impact of airway nerves and air pollution. Additionally, experts identified a need for further investigation into those with severe asthma who do not respond to steroid treatment and the possibility of primary prevention in children.
