A few words from the Head of Department

Dear LIME colleagues,
I trust you all enjoyed your vacations, and it feels good to see LIME filling up with people again. Please keep sending pictures from your summer to Marie for the pentry screen to prolong the summer feeling for a while (read more under header COMMUNICATIONS & WEB below).

For some doctoral students, it must, however, have been a tough summer. LIME will have five (!) thesis defences (see which under the header CALENDAR below) between August 26 and September 26, and certainly more to come until the end of the year. This is really amazing, and I already look forward to a large “LIME table” at the doctoral degree conferment ceremony in spring 2026.
Further, I would like to welcome Per Palmgren to the LIME Management Group from the autumn term, representing doctoral education.
I also would like to highlight the deadline Sept 2nd for younger researchers (=obtained PhD on January 2013 or later), who are employed at least 50% at KI, to apply for the KI Consolidator Grant.
With that I wish us all an inspiring, creative and productive autumn!
Sabine

SUSTAINABILITY & ENVIRONMENT

Our building has south-west facing blinds between the panes of glass, which are controlled automatically, and via sun sensors. The new blinds between the panes of glass work just as the old ones, which means that they can be controlled manually via buttons in the office. Once or twice a day, they return to automatic control.

LIME´S JUNIOR FACULTY
LIME JF are pleased to announce this years’ Mentorship programme to start in the Autumn of 2025.
Within this programme we will look to match mentors (Professors, Docents and Senior Faculty at LIME) with mentees (early career researchers, Junior staff, postdocs). An estimate of the time to devote to mentorship is two hours per month (November 2025 – April 2026). However, mentor-mentee pairs can arrange meetings according to their preferences. Topics for the meetings can be related to networking, career paths and opportunities, sharing of knowledge and experience. Let Ulrika Lögdberg know if you are interested.
ETHICS AT KI
The overview page "Ethics at KI" is now available in a new, updated version. Ethics is an important strategic area for Karolinska Institutet and is relevant in both education and research. Here you can read more about what we do, ask for advice and find links to useful sources on ethical issues, rules and guidelines, literature and education.

Hej Elias,
What made you want to come and pursue a doctoral education at LIME? And how long ago was that?
I’ve been here for about one year and nine months! As I had been doing some research and a lot of teaching, educational research was something I really wanted to try and luckily, there was an open PhD-position.
Can you describe your research so that anyone understands it?
Of course, my main topic is patient involvement in health professions education, which is when patients are involved in education with the primary aim of educating through their unique experience of either sickness, symptoms or health care.
Have you always had an interest in educational research? What kind of change in the field do you hope to see?
My interest in educational research was probably more general before I started, but it didn’t take long for me to develop a great interest in patient involvement as well. I hope that patient involvement moves from small, isolated events to a structured sustainable part of health professions education.

Being a doctoral student can be really stressful. Do you have any tips for other students on ways to keep the work balance?
I think it’s important to be kind to yourself. It might feel like you have to work 25 hours a day, but you don’t, what you’re doing is enough and your well-being is more important than any PhD project. You might also feel alone, not enough or like an imposter but you’re not. You are enough no matter what any reviewer or other unnecessarily mean person says, and you should be proud of yourself.
Therefore, it is important to surround yourself with people and activities outside of work that are rewarding, recovering and empowering to remind you of what is most important, your own well-being.
What is the most recent thing that you have learnt?
I’m a sucker for trivia and “fun” facts (they’re rarely that fun, right?) and I recently learnt that around 100 000 moose are killed in Sweden each year, and I find that a fascinating number.
Do you have a motto that you´d like to share?
I’m not much of a motto-person unfortunately but let’s go with “Be kind to yourself”. I think a lot of us need to hear that more often.
