Newsletter from EfD

November 2022

Dear friends of EfD,

While the world has met for COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, EfD has been busy publishing and engaging for a more sustainable economic development throughout the Global South. In this newsletter you find a lot of food for thought. Don’t miss Metcalf’s “Five Myths About Carbon Pricing”, and how extreme weather events can actually lead to pro-environmental behavior (possibly the only silver lining that the current climate crisis provide us with?). We also have real impact throughout our global network, see e.g. the reports on clean cooking in Tanzania and tax exemption for electric vehicles in Ethiopia.

Please enjoy and share the latest news and research from the EfD network!

Over 33,000 Tanzanians die annually from using firewood for cooking. Climate change, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity are other effects of the burning of firewood. The Tanzanian Ministry of Energy arranged a national conference to address this problem. EfD Tanzania has played an instrumental role in this process. Read more about this important event and the actions that were initiated!

Modeling tool can improve funding allocation for ecosystem services

In Costa Rica, the Payment for Ecosystem Services has helped reduce the deforestation rate and land degradation. Photo: Bárbara Viguera.

A team of EfD Central America researchers provided a training titled Monitoring the provision of ecosystem services using InVEST to make decisions. The aim was to strengthen the skills of the staff of the National Forestry Financing Fund (FONAFIFO) in the use of a modeling tool. The tool improves the allocation of funds to maximize water resources and update the knowledge on water dynamics related to farms, forests, and landscapes. Read more about this smart tool!

Incorporating Just Transitions in Kenya’s Low-Carbon Economy Development Path

Tree on the svannna

Despite its low contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, Kenya bears a disproportionate burden of climate change impacts. These impacts are disrupting the country’s economic performance. In many cases, the catastrophic effects of climate change are hardest on the poor. An inclusive and just approach is needed to reduce inequality, as well as enhance the co-benefits of a transition to net zero in Kenya according to EfD researchers Richard Mulwa, Elly Musembi, and co-author Margaret Maina. Five Myths About Carbon Pricing

Screen shot of participants

While carbon pricing, in general, and carbon taxes, in particular, are popular with economists, they are subject to considerable misunderstanding among policymakers and the public. This study by EfD associate researcher Gilbert E. Metcalf debunks the most common misconceptions. This is a must-read!

Extreme weather events and pro-environmental behavior: evidence from a climate change vulnerable country

Drought

Experiencing an extreme weather event and its consequences might make the risks associated with climate change more tangible. So would those experiences translate into the adoption of pro-environmental behaviors? Understanding this relationship is fundamental for the successful design of policies. EfD researcher Alejandro López-Feldman and his co-author Emilio González have found that there is in fact a positive relationship between experiencing an extreme weather event and willingness to take pro-environmental actions. Learn more about their interesting findings!

Aligning development and climate goals means Africa’s energy systems will be based on clean energy technologies in the long term, but pathways to get there are uncertain and varies across countries. A large group of interdisciplinary researchers provides geopolitical, policy, finance, and research recommendations to create country-specific evidence to identify adequate energy system pathways for development and to enable their implementation.
