September is not far ahead and we are looking forward to our Annual Meeting with great enthusiasm! We hope you have marked your calendars and that you check our website regularly for updates on the event!
In this newsletter, you will read about the Inclusive Green Economy (IGE) program, where the first group of civil servants has now finished their training and a new group has just embarked on the program.
March is also the month when we celebrate International Women's Day, so we take the opportunity to present some good news on the topic of women in environmental economics from our network.
You will also, as always, find a lot of news about the exciting research and activities in our network.

Submit your papers!
|
Do you want to present your research at our Annual Meeting? EfD invites researchers to submit full draft papers on topics related to environmental and resource economics in developing countries and relevant EfD themes (https://efdinitiative.org/topics). Please submit your manuscript online via Editorial Express, www.editorialexpress.com/efd, by June 1, 2022. Selected authors will be notified by July 15, after which the registration for the Annual Meeting will be open. Accepted papers must be submitted by August 15, 2022, to be included in the final program of the Annual Meeting.

The first group of senior civil servants in Africa has now finished the Inclusive Green Economy in Practice program.
“Developing capacity on Inclusive Green Economy is crucial to ensure that our resources can be used by future generations too,” concluded Ann Mwangi, Chief Economist at Kenya’s State Department for Planning, who just completed the program. Meet her and hear her insightful reflections!

Lessons learned from a joint cross-country workshop in the East Africa Region

Civil servants and academics participated in a unique workshop in November
2021, sharing experiences of strategies and policy instruments for an inclusive and green economy. The workshop was included in the Inclusive Green Economy in Practice program. There are many valuable outcomes and learnings from this workshop.

EfD Ethiopia, ECRC, organized a training-of-trainers workshop as a part of the Inclusive Green Economy program (IGE). The purpose of the workshop was to share knowledge between the 2021 participants in the program, those who will participate in 2022, and other civil servants from government organizations.

EfD researcher Rebecca Klege has contributed an article to the prominent publication Foresight Africa 2022 by the Brookings Institution. This publication explores the top priorities for Africa in the coming year. The title of Rebecca Klege’s article is Strategies for advancing African women in academia.
She presents an alarming report of the structural inequalities within academia but also suggests solutions to address the problems. Read this important article!

EfD researcher Erin Sills is announcing a unique postdoc position on gender issues. It's funded by EfD and will have two main objectives.
The postdoc will analyze the patterns of representation, recruitments, advancements, identify barriers that women are facing, and propose what types of interventions are needed .
The other objective is to contribute to gender analysis of sustainability transitions and to look for linkages and synergies between gender and other dimensions of inclusive green transitions.

Women from Latin American countries are increasingly entering the academic field of environmental economics. This is apparent at the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE), where eight out of nine new students in the International Master's Program on Economics, Development, and Climate Change, are women from El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. Understanding the knowledge gaps to achieve a low-carbon transportation sector is essential to guide future research agendas. EfD researchers aim to provide a systematic review to identify these knowledge gaps.

Converting mangrove areas into surface water for shrimp cultivation is a common agricultural practice in the Mekong River Delta, Vietnam. More surface water is believed to allow for higher yield and productivity. But there are also concerns that less natural mangroves can bring environmental risks that hamper shrimp production. A recent study finds that mangrove deforestation has both positive and negative effects on aquaculture.

The educational program "Reducing plastic pollution in the ocean" was presented in book format on March 7, in a virtual launch. This book will be available in Spanish for all teachers who want to educate their students and their families on plastic. Learn more about this great project!

EfD Uganda held a strategic planning meeting to help write the strategic plan for the next five years to ensure proper environmental management in Uganda. Officials from government ministries, departments, and agencies, environmental economists from the Makerere University colleges of Business and Management Sciences (CoBAMS) and of the Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), representatives from the civil society organizations and the private sector participated.

Researchers from EfD Chile and the Center of Applied Ecology and Sustainability (CAPES), Marcela Jaime and Felipe Vásquez helped organize four research sessions at the 2022 Society for Cost-Benefit Analysis conference. These sessions focused on postgraduate students of Latin American countries, interaction with policymakers associated with water utilities, and tariff structures.

Work at EfD as Global Partnerships Coordinator
|
The Global Partnerships Coordinator will maintain and expand connections with EfD’s research partners in the Global North and with international organizations. Activities include joint applications for funding for EfDs activities, stimulating new opportunities for research collaborations, and enlisting partners’ participation in capacity development and policy engagement.
You have demonstrated skills in building cross-national and cross-cultural relationships, identifying relevant funding opportunities for partnership activities, and participating in multi-stakeholder initiatives.

Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy Postdoctoral Researcher

The Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral research position in the area of energy and development, specifically in the areas of energy poverty/access and sustainable energy transitions.
The position has a one-year initial appointment, with the possibility of renewal in future years.
The position entails work to support and lead certain aspects of the research portfolio of the James E. Rogers Energy Access Project (EAP) at the Nicholas Institute & Energy Initiative, which is co-led by EfD researcher Professor Marc Jeuland.

EAERE 27th Annual Conference
|
The Annual Conference of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists takes place in Rimini, Italy on June 28-July 1, 2022.
It is organized by the Department of Economics of the University of Bologna (UniBo) and supported by the Bank of Italy and the European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE). It will take place at the PalaCongressi of Rimini.
The conference is planned to take place in person while including some hybrid events as part of the program.

Globalization after COVID: Business as usual, or not?
|
What are the forces that will shape globalization after COVID19? Does digitalization matter for international trade and within-country inequality? How will policies to combat climate change affect cross-border flows of goods and investment? The University of Gothenburg hosts the Kapuscinski Development Lecture on 6 April.
Speaker is Beata Javorcik, Chief Economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The journal Frontiers in Forests and Global Change (Forest Management) has two calls for papers on forestry.
The topics are:
1. Forest Carbon Credits as a Nature-Based Solution to Climate Change?
2. Implementing Forest Carbon Credits as a Nature-Based Climate Change Solution: Scaling Up for Impact
Submit full manuscripts by 30 April 2022 for both special issues.

Topic: Implications of Climate Change and Natural Disasters for Latin America and the Caribbean.
This project will sponsor a set of papers that tackle specific aspects of climate challenges, especially adaptation, across countries in LAC. The IDB and the journal Economics of Disasters and Climate Change (EDAC) will organize a conference in 2023 dedicated to this project and publish a special issue including selected papers from the conference.
Deadline for proposals: May 02, 2022.
