Smallholder farms in and around cities in sub-Saharan Africa provide many ecosystem services and boost household income and nutrition. But the lack of access to land constraints these benefits. In this EfD Discussion Paper, EfD researchers Byela Tibesigwa, Herbert Ntuli, and Telvin Muta Denje find that households are willing to pay for urban farm plots. The researchers want to nudge policymakers to craft inclusive green economy strategies that include urban agriculture and irrigation infrastructure. Read this interesting paper!

Distributional preferences in adolescent peer networks
EfD researchers Yonas Alem, Fredrik Carlsson, and Martin G. Kocher and their co-authors Simon Schürz and Mikael Lindahl have studied distributional preferences in adolescent peer networks. The study was published in Experimental Economics. They found, among other things, that pairs of students who report a friendship link are more likely to exhibit the same preference type. A low rank in academic performance and a central position within the network relate positively to a higher likelihood of being classified as spiteful. Check out this exciting study!

This study by EfD researchers Yuanyuan Yi, Fredrik Carlsson, Gunnar Köhlin, and Jintao Xu published in European Review of Agricultural Economicsevaluates whether the devolution reform of forestland to household management improves efficiency and household welfare. They find that participation in the forestland rental markets increases household per-capita income and they do not find any support for forestland captured by land-richer, wealthier, larger or powerful households.
