We hope you have noted the dates, September 22-26, for the EfD Annual Meeting in your calendars. It will be fantastic to meet in person again! We can now reveal who the keynote speakers are - see below!

In this newsletter, you will read about the Emission Pricing for Development - a collaborative program that Jan Steckel EfD Researcher at MCC in Berlin will help to get off to a flying start.

You will get updates from the Inclusive Green Economy (IGE) program, where a new group has embarked on the program and met in person in Kenya. The program has also been showcased at the Research and Innovation Week in Tanzania.

You will also, as always, find a lot of news about the exciting research and activities in our network.

EfD Global Hub

Jan Steckel reinforces EfD’s Global Hub

Jan Steckel, a well-known researcher within the EfD network, will spend four months at EfD’s Global Hub in Gothenburg, Sweden. Jan Steckel is usually leading the Climate and Development group at the Mercator Institute (MCC) in Berlin and works as also a Professor for Climate and Development Economics at the Brandenburg University of Technology. During his stay in Gothenburg, he will kickstart Emission Pricing for Development, a collaborative research program.

Inclusive Green Economy (IGE)

The Inclusive Green Economy in practice program (IGE program) is now moving on into its second year, and a new group of participants, so-called IGE fellows, have embarked on the program. The IGE program is aimed at civil servants in Africa and strives to promote the capacity, understanding, and priority of IGE and strengthen the national system for a green economic transformation.

EfD Tanzania presented the Green Economy in practice program (IGE) at the University of Dar es Salaam’s Research and Innovation Week, which kicked off on April 20th. The exhibit was very successful and many of the visitors to the booth wanted to learn more about the program and the IGE concept.

EfD Central America

New training improves community water management

Nine women and nine men from rural communities of Costa Rica representing water community organizations (WCO) received training in communication and leadership and the modern management of social enterprises. The WCO provides water services to many people in rural and peri-urban areas. The training was a three-day workshop held in Camaronal, Puntarenas, a coastal community in Costa Rica, at the end of February.

Building “microworlds” helps analyze the electricity markets

The analysis of electricity markets is difficult because of multiple possible solutions and different local conditions. Simulators facilitate this task for policymakers and researchers. An exciting project in Colombia has resulted in “microworld” simulators that provide valuable insights. Read more about this!

Researchers from the EfD Water Observatories project participated as chairs and discussants in two sessions of this year's Society for Benefit-Cost Analysis Annual Conference, held virtually on March 17-22, sharing knowledge and perspectives about the water topic.

Environmental experts reviewed EfD Nigeria’s five years strategic plan

Scholars, policymakers, private sector practitioners, and other stakeholders in the field of environment and development have commended EfD Nigeria for developing a strategic plan that will guide the activities of the center from 2022 to 2026. The plan is expected to contribute to sustainable development in Nigeria.

Researchers from around the world are invited to present, discuss and network on issues related to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8 in Agenda 2030.

Promoting Sustainable Development Through Global Infrastructure Initiatives: A Sino-European Perspective

On behalf of the Alliance of Chinese and European Business Schools (ACE), the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg is hosting a one-and-a-half-day conference that explores how sustainable development is understood or should be conceived in the context of global infrastructure initiatives. The conference will be held in a hybrid format.

Economics of the impacts of natural ecosystem loss and degradation on human health Environmental and Resource Economics

The call for this special issue solicits empirical or theoretical economic analyses of the relationship between ecosystem change and human health. They encourage studies that examine mental and physical health outcomes; nuanced characterizations of ecosystem loss or degradation; nonlinear relationships; and/or focus on diverse geographic regions.

The journal Frontiers in Forests and Global Change (Forest Management) has two calls for papers on forestry.

The topics are:
1. Forest Carbon Credits as a Nature-Based Solution to Climate Change?
2. Implementing Forest Carbon Credits as a Nature-Based Climate Change Solution: Scaling Up for Impact.

Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE) programme

A call for proposals to address climate change and natural hazard risk across Africa and Asia pacific.
CLARE is a partnership between the FCDO and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada. This call is seeking applications for research on new knowledge, data and tools and capacity focused on tackling real-world barriers to adapting to climate change and managing risks from natural hazards.

As a Forest Finance Researcher, you will support their program of work on forests and prosperity across the Global South with a special emphasis on sub-Saharan Africa.
Supporting the design, implementation, and monitoring of innovative action research projects, you will focus on building forest finance knowledge, capabilities, and interactions.
You will also conduct research with colleagues and/or partner organizations in low and middle-income countries and analyze and communicate findings.
